MTG Star Trek Bonus Cards Highlight Disappointing Picard Collectible

Share

On November 9th, players will have their first opportunity to purchase their choice of Secret Lairs from Set Phasers to Superdrop. If you’re a Star Trek fan who loves flavorful, stunning designs, this drop is for you. Even though these products haven’t gone on sale yet, it looks like we may already have a sneak peek at a potential bonus card.

Multiple Command Towers

In a recent Instagram post, MTG enthusiast Ben Bateman highlighted an MTG Star Trek-themed party he attended, and players quickly pointed out one detail. A copy of Command Tower featuring Jean-Luc Picard in the artwork was showcased in the reel alongside the Borg foil drop.

While it hasn’t been confirmed, players speculate that this is likely one of the bonus cards players can open. With Captain Picard literally sitting in his “command tower” on the card, it’s a flavorful choice.

Interestingly, soon after this reveal, another version of Command Tower showcasing Kathryn Janeway in the art was found, too. As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if every Star Trek Captain earns their own Command Tower bonus card, perhaps across different Secret Lairs in the Superdrop.

From a financial standpoint, Command Tower is unfortunately a dud valued at $0.25, which has already been reprinted countless times. Still, given that it fits seamlessly into every multicolor Commander deck, there’s always demand.

Plus, some copies of Command Tower from previous Secret Lairs can still be worth a pretty penny. The most recent Secret Lair printing, from the Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: Sold Separately drop, is currently on sale for over $14.

Prices go as high as $60 for the Galaxy Foil version of artist Dani Pendergast’s Command Tower, and while these Star Trek ones likely won’t be that much, it goes to show what premium copies can be worth.

Terminate

In addition to the bonus cards associated with Set Phasers to Superdrop, it appears a bonus card for the Secret Lair Countdown Kit: Marvel’s History of Heroes has also been revealed. This time, the extra addition is Terminate, and it’s safe to say players aren’t thrilled.

While this instant is a solid inclusion in Rakdos Commander decks, it’s also incredibly cheap, with Star Trek Commander copies already on sale for just over $0.30. Compared to Alhammarret’s Archive Alhammarret’s Archive Alhammarret’s Archive If you would gain life, you gain twice that much life instead.
If you would draw a card except the first one you draw in each of your draw steps, draw two cards instead.
, a banger mythic reprint bonus card from last year’s Countdown Kit, Terminate looks quite mediocre.

Given that many players were already underwhelmed with the product’s many ultra-cheap inclusions, this only added fuel to the fire. It’s still possible to find other Bonus Cards in this Countdown Kit, but past Bonus Cards for these products have been incredibly consistent.

Since Marvel’s History of Heroes is still for sale in the Secret Lair store almost a week after going on sale, it’s safe to say this Secret Lair product was a flop. With a frankly terrible Bonus Card on offer, too, it’s no wonder players aren’t fans.
