Hidden Gems That Supercharge MTG Star Trek’s Spacecraft in Commander

Share

For Commander, one of MTG Star Trek’s biggest selling points is the variety of cool Spacecraft across the set. Spacecraft offer plenty of creative deckbuilding opportunities, focusing on ways to amplify charge counters and maximize the Station mechanic.

Well, if you’re hoping to get the most out of these artifacts, we’ve got some powerful and sometimes overlooked support pieces that are sure to rev up your engines.

MTG Kona, Rescue Beastie

Kona, Rescue Beastie has one of the gnarliest triggered abilities out there, but it takes some work to get going. Normally, you’d need this Beast to survive until your next turn, then land a clean attack before you cheat a huge haymaker into play.

Spacecraft lets you cheat the system, though, since you can immediately Station a Spacecraft and trigger Kona without putting it in harm’s way. From there, any number of bombs from Omniscience Omniscience Omniscience You may cast spells from your hand without paying their mana costs. to Portal to Phyrexia Portal to Phyrexia Portal to Phyrexia When this artifact enters, each opponent sacrifices three creatures of their choice.

will put you in a commanding position.

While any Spacecraft will do the trick, Kona pairs particularly well with The Seriema The Seriema The Seriema When The Seriema enters, search your library for a legendary creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.
Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery. It's an artifact creature at 7+.)

Other tapped legendary creatures you control have indestructible.
, which both tutors the legend and protects it from destruction-based effects once fully Stationed. This way, you can essentially guarantee at least one trigger before your opponent has a window to get Kona off the board.

Of course, Kona isn’t the only card that rewards you for tapping it at will, as Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero Wylie Duke, Atiin Hero Vigilance
Whenever Wylie Duke becomes tapped, you gain 1 life and draw a card.
, and Emmara, Soul of the Accord Emmara, Soul of the Accord Emmara, Soul of the Accord Whenever Emmara becomes tapped, create a 1/1 white Soldier creature token with lifelink. also benefit from Spacecraft. Similarly, by tapping creatures like King Macar, the Gold-Cursed King Macar, the Gold-Cursed King Macar, the Gold-Cursed Inspired — Whenever King Macar becomes untapped, you may exile target creature. If you do, create a Gold token. (It's an artifact with "Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.") , you can reliably trigger Inspired the next turn.

MTG Captain America, Living Legend

While some Spacecraft like The Eternity Elevator The Eternity Elevator The Eternity Elevator {T}: Add {C}{C}{C}.
Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery.)
20+ | {T}: Add X mana of any one color, where X is the number of charge counters on The Eternity Elevator.
and Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought Dawnsire, Sunstar Dreadnought Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery. It's an artifact creature at 20+.)

offer immense upside, getting them fully Stationed takes a lot of work. Even if you have a big board of creatures to tap, leaving yourself defenseless in combat is risky.

Luckily, Captain America, Living Legend helps on both counts. All your creatures can either double up on Stationing your Spacecraft or Station once and still block, giving you complete control. Meanwhile, creatures like the aforementioned Wylie Duke and King Macar can trigger multiple times a turn.

As a multicolored permanent, Captain America also adds synergy in an Infinite Guideline Station Infinite Guideline Station Infinite Guideline Station When Infinite Guideline Station enters, create a tapped 2/2 colorless Robot artifact creature token for each multicolored permanent you control.
Station (Tap another creature you control: Put charge counters equal to its power on this Spacecraft. Station only as a sorcery. It's an artifact creature at 12+.)

shell. Whether you choose to include Captain America in the 99 or build a dedicated Spacecraft deck with it as the leader, this card should do a lot of work.

MTG Energy Chamber

For the low price of two mana, Energy Chamber provides consistent charge counters for your Spacecraft every turn. While this is admittedly a slow process on its own, counter-doubling effects like the newly printed Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge If you would put one or more charge counters on an artifact you control, put twice that many charge counters on that artifact instead. speed things up.

Energy Chamber also synergizes nicely with effects like Paradox Haze Paradox Haze Paradox Haze Enchant player

that grant extra upkeep steps. When combined with Proliferate staples like Contagion Engine Contagion Engine Contagion Engine When this artifact enters, put a -1/-1 counter on each creature target player controls.
{4}, {T}: Proliferate twice. (Choose any number of permanents and/or players, then give each another counter of each kind already there. Then do it again.)
, you can fully Station your Spacecraft in no time without using a single creature.

This tool also grows your Spacecraft once they are fully Stationed, making them even scarier in combat. Buffing Starship Enterprise Starship Enterprise Starship Enterprise Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, put four charge counters on Starship Enterprise.

Whenever Starship Enterprise deals combat damage to a player, draw that many cards.
is especially useful, letting you draw extra cards when it connects.

This mode makes Energy Chamber a nice step up from similar cards like Surge Node Surge Node Surge Node This artifact enters with six charge counters on it.
{1}, {T}, Remove a charge counter from this artifact: Put a charge counter on target artifact.
or Coretapper Coretapper Coretapper {T}: Put a charge counter on target artifact.
Sacrifice this creature: Put two charge counters on target artifact.
, which also have some utility in Spacecraft decks.

MTG Moxite Refinery

Thanks to its ability to convert charge counters into +1/+1 counters and vice versa, Moxite Refinery makes for an insane engine in Spacecraft decks. Once you Station a creature to add charge counters to a Spacecraft, you can remove those counters to grow another creature, and Station the Spacecraft again.

Every turn you do this, your creatures will continue growing bigger and bigger, making it trivial to fully Station even the neediest of Spacecraft. Eventually, you’ll have an enormous army to attack and end the game with.

If that weren’t enough, Moxite Refinery also lets you move charge counters from a Spacecraft to a different artifact. This makes it surprisingly easy to set up a win with Darksteel Reactor Darksteel Reactor Darksteel Reactor Indestructible (Effects that say "destroy" don't destroy this artifact.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a charge counter on this artifact.
When this artifact has twenty or more charge counters on it, you win the game.
after you’ve over-Stationed one of your Spacecraft.

With just a three-power creature out alongside a Spacecraft and Refinery, you can even take infinite turns with Magistrate’s Scepter Magistrate’s Scepter Magistrate’s Scepter {4}, {T}: Put a charge counter on this artifact.
{T}, Remove three charge counters from this artifact: Take an extra turn after this one.
. This combo potential, combined with the ability to flood the board with +1/+1 counters, makes this two-mana artifact a huge winner from all the new Spacecraft support.
