The Best MTG Star Trek Commanders

Share

Every Star Trek card has finally been revealed, and it’s clear this set was designed with Commander in mind. Between the main set and the four precons, there are plenty of different legends worth playing.

With such an abundance of Commanders to choose from, narrowing down the top options can be hard, but we’ve come to do just that. Of all the options in the set, here are the five best MTG Star Trek Commanders.

5 | MTG Jurati, Cordial Queen

Jurati Cordial Queen MTG

Jurati, Cordial Queen has a lot of potential, threatening to flood the board with up to three artifacts every turn cycle. The conditions to use Jurati are a bit tricky, since you need both artifact tokens and creatures to make her work, but cards like Sai, Master Thopterist Sai, Master Thopterist Sai, Master Thopterist Whenever you cast an artifact spell, create a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying.
{1}{U}, Sacrifice two artifacts: Draw a card.
and Simulacrum Synthesizer Simulacrum Synthesizer Simulacrum Synthesizer When this artifact enters, scry 2.
Whenever another artifact you control with mana value 3 or greater enters, create a 0/0 colorless Construct artifact creature token with "This token gets +1/+1 for each artifact you control."
can feed both angles.

Where Jurati really starts to pop off is when you can make an artifact token of a beefy artifact and start copying it, which is actually pretty easy to do. Cards like Donatello, Gadget Master Donatello, Gadget Master Donatello, Gadget Master Sneak {1}{U} (You may cast this spell for {1}{U} if you also return an unblocked attacker you control to hand during the declare blockers step. He enters tapped and attacking.)
Whenever Donatello deals combat damage to a player, create a token that's a copy of target artifact you control.
and Ultron, Artificial Malevolence Ultron, Artificial Malevolence Ultron, Artificial Malevolence Whenever another nontoken artifact you control enters, you may pay {2}. If you do, create a token that's a copy of it. If the token isn't a creature, it becomes a 2/2 Robot Villain creature in addition to its other types. make this easy, while Liquimetal Coating Liquimetal Coating Liquimetal Coating {T}: Target permanent becomes an artifact in addition to its other types until end of turn. can technically allow Jurati to copy nonartifact tokens, too.

By combining Ultron, Mirror Box Mirror Box Mirror Box The "legend rule" doesn't apply to permanents you control.
Each legendary creature you control gets +1/+1.
Each nontoken creature you control gets +1/+1 for each other creature you control with the same name as that creature.
, and Gonti’s Aether Heart Gonti’s Aether Heart Gonti’s Aether Heart Whenever Gonti's Aether Heart or another artifact you control enters, you get {E}{E} (two energy counters).
Pay eight {E}, Exile Gonti's Aether Heart: Take an extra turn after this one.
with your Commander’s ability, it’s even possible to take infinite turns! Just make a token copy of Heart, connect in combat with three creatures, and you’ll immediately net enough Energy to take an extra turn and repeat.

This upside for three mana is incredible, making Jurati a top-tier option despite its narrow applications. When building around her, making things line up isn’t that difficult.

4 | MTG The Borg Queen

The Borg Queen

Despite being just a precon Commander, The Borg Queen is powerful enough to take over games. Even if this legend’s trigger doesn’t hit anything spectacular, the Anthem effect alone can be lethal on wide boards.

Once you add trigger doublers like Roaming Throne Roaming Throne Roaming Throne Ward {2}
As this creature enters, choose a creature type.
This creature is the chosen type in addition to its other types.
If a triggered ability of another creature you control of the chosen type triggers, it triggers an additional time.
, you’ll be able to generate tons of value when The Borg Queen enters or attacks. Combine that with Conjurer’s Closet Conjurer’s Closet Conjurer’s Closet At the beginning of your end step, you may exile target creature you control, then return that card to the battlefield under your control. , Deadeye Navigator Deadeye Navigator Deadeye Navigator Soulbond (You may pair this creature with another unpaired creature when either enters. They remain paired for as long as you control both of them.)
As long as Deadeye Navigator is paired with another creature, each of those creatures has "{1}{U}: Exile this creature, then return it to the battlefield under your control."
, and other blink effects, and you’ll assimilate an army in no time.

Since The Borg Queen’s buff affects any artifact creature you control, token generators like Sai, Master Thopterist can do a ton of work. Similarly, Esper Sentinel Esper Sentinel Esper Sentinel Whenever an opponent casts their first noncreature spell each turn, draw a card unless that player pays {X}, where X is this creature's power. ‘s trigger becomes a lot more threatening when it has three power.

The only thing holding this card back is its hefty mana cost, so you’ll need to play plenty of mana rocks to accelerate it out. If you do, though, the payoff is certainly worth it.

3 | MTG Captain Benjamin Sisko

Captain Benjamin Sisko

Crafting around the Dilemna mechanic is surprisingly easy, especially in a five-color shell, which Captain Benjamin Sisko rewards you for. You not only get a stream of tokens, but you also generate card advantage once you’ve built out a board.

While one-time effects like Boros Charm can be good with Sisko, the real key to using this Commander lies in repeatable Dilemma triggers, like Black Market Connections Black Market Connections Black Market Connections At the beginning of your first main phase, choose one or more —
• Sell Contraband — Create a Treasure token. You lose 1 life.
• Buy Information — Draw a card. You lose 2 life.
• Hire a Mercenary — Create a 3/2 colorless Shapeshifter creature token with changeling. You lose 3 life. (It is every creature type.)
. This means that Sisko can go absolutely nuts with Galadriel, Light of Valinor Galadriel, Light of Valinor Galadriel, Light of Valinor Alliance — Whenever another creature you control enters, choose one that hasn't been chosen this turn —
• Add {G}{G}{G}.
• Put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control.
• Scry 2, then draw a card.
, since each Officer entering lets you choose another mode, creating a mini chain reaction.

Dilemma is certainly the star of the show with Sisko, but you can also lean into his Officer generation with Captain Jean-Luc Picard Captain Jean-Luc Picard Captain Jean-Luc Picard Other creatures you control get +1/+1.
Whenever you cast a creature or Spacecraft spell, create a 1/1 red Officer creature token.
Tap seven untapped Officers you control: Search your library for a Spacecraft card, put it onto the battlefield with seven charge counters on it, then shuffle.
and Captain James T. Kirk Captain James T. Kirk Captain James T. Kirk Whenever Captain Kirk enters or attacks, choose one. If you have no cards in hand, choose one or more instead.
• Discard a card, then draw a card.
• Create a 1/1 red Officer creature token.
• Creatures you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.
. With token doublers and creature-enhancing effects like Cathar’s Crusade Cathar’s Crusade Cathar’s Crusade Whenever a creature you control enters, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. , Sisko can generate a ton of value with this activated ability.

As a value-generating two-drop whose color identity lets you play every card under the sun, it wouldn’t be crazy if Benjamin Sisko even made a competitive splash in Duel Commander. Beating out Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Power-up — {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}: Put two +1/+1 counters on Nick Fury, then look at the top seven cards of your library. You may put a Hero, Equipment, or Vehicle card from among them onto the battlefield. If it's a double-faced card, you may transform it. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. (Activate each power-up ability only once. Reduce the cost by his mana cost if he entered this turn.) in this role may be hard, but this creature’s upside is certainly higher.

2 | MTG Hugh, First of Many

Hugh First of Many

Replicate has always been a ridiculous ability, and Hugh, First of Many gifts it to every artifact in your deck. By playing lots of mana rocks and discount effects like Etherium Sculptor Etherium Sculptor Etherium Sculptor Artifact spells you cast cost {1} less to cast. early, you can set up massive Replicate chains later on.

Of course, the cheaper your bomby artifacts are, the more copies you’ll be able to make. With this in mind, Affinity payoffs like Thought Monitor Thought Monitor Thought Monitor Affinity for artifacts (This spell costs {1} less to cast for each artifact you control.)
Flying
When this creature enters, draw two cards.
and Refurbished Familiar Refurbished Familiar Refurbished Familiar Affinity for artifacts (This spell costs {1} less to cast for each artifact you control.)
Flying
When this creature enters, each opponent discards a card. For each opponent who can't, you draw a card.
are some of your strongest tools.

Then, to get even more mileage out of their triggered abilities and your Commander, you can always bounce them back to your hand with Erratic Portal Erratic Portal Erratic Portal {1}, {T}: Return target creature to its owner's hand unless its controller pays {1}. or Ancestral Statue Ancestral Statue Ancestral Statue When this creature enters, return a nonland permanent you control to its owner's hand. . Adding Twinning Staff Twinning Staff Twinning Staff If you would copy a spell one or more times, instead copy it that many times plus an additional time. You may choose new targets for the additional copy.
{7}, {T}: Copy target instant or sorcery spell you control. You may choose new targets for the copy.
to the equation kicks things up a notch, too.

Don’t let the fact that Hugh is a secondary precon Commander fool you; it’s nearly as good as it gets. There’s just one Commander that beats this one out…

1 | MTG Q, Your Illustrious Host

Q Your Illustrious Host MTG

Q, Your Illustrious Host is the best Faerie Typal Commander we’ve ever seen, plain and simple. The wider you go, the more spells you can cast for free via Q’s activated ability.

As a result, you’re incentivized to fill your deck with token producers like Bitterblossom Bitterblossom Bitterblossom At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life and create a 1/1 black Faerie Rogue creature token with flying. and Bitterbloom Bearer Bitterbloom Bearer Bitterbloom Bearer Flash
Flying
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life and create a 1/1 blue and black Faerie creature token with flying.
. With a minor draw-two theme in the deck, you also get to utilize Improbable Alliance Improbable Alliance Improbable Alliance Whenever you draw your second card each turn, create a 1/1 blue Faerie creature token with flying.
{4}{U}{R}: Draw a card, then discard a card.
and Data, Professor for more consistency.

The more activations you get, the better, so after building a big board, untap effects like Seedborn Muse Seedborn Muse Seedborn Muse Untap all permanents you control during each other player's untap step. let Q really pop off. Each activation even triggers Vega, the Watcher Vega, the Watcher Vega, the Watcher Flying
Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, draw a card.
and Spider-Verse Spider-Verse Spider-Verse The "legend rule" doesn't apply to Spiders you control.
Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you may copy it. If you do, you may choose new targets for the copy. If the copy is a permanent spell, it gains haste. Do this only once each turn.
to pull you further ahead.

Of course, you also want to guarantee that the spells you cast for free and copy with Spider-Verse are hugely impactful. This is where library-manipulation effects like Sensei’s Divining Top Sensei’s Divining Top Sensei’s Divining Top {1}: Look at the top three cards of your library, then put them back in any order.
{T}: Draw a card, then put this artifact on top of its owner's library.
and Scroll Rack Scroll Rack Scroll Rack {1}, {T}: Exile any number of cards from your hand face down. Put that many cards from the top of your library into your hand. Then look at the exiled cards and put them on top of your library in any order. come in, helping set up the top of your deck with haymakers.
