Hasbro Names Games Industry Veteran as New President of Wizards

The beginning of a bold new era?

Back in July, John Hight, then President of Wizards of the Coast, stepped down from his duties. This followed a string of game cancellations from the company, which generated a lot of financial uncertainty among players and shareholders alike. Since then Wizards has been on the hunt for someone new to step into the role, and they’ve finally found them today. As announced by Hasbro, Dan Ayoub will be taking on the President role at WotC, starting next week.

This new appointment was just announced via the Hasbro Investors news page, and it’s a milestone moment in several ways. For starters, Dan Ayoub is the first internal candidate to ever be promoted into the President role at WotC. The announcement notes that he beat out “dozens of internal and external candidates” to claim the title, which speaks volumes of his abilities.

Ayoub is also a seasoned veteran of the games industry, having spent the last 25 years working on games in various forms. Starting out as a Producer at Ubisoft way back in 1999, he spent time at Electronic Arts and Disney, before moving into an 11-year stint at Microsoft. This then led to his appointment as VP Head of Studios at WotC, and eventually Senior VP, which he’s been working as since 2024. This internal experience should give Ayoub an edge over recent Presidents, like John Hight and Cynthia Williams, who effectively transferred in from outside.

On top of his industry experience, Ayoub describes himself as a “lifelong fan” of the games WotC produces. He notes that he’s been playing Magic since “the year it launched,” and even plays Dungeons and Dragons with the same group he’s been with since he was 10 years old. As he says in today’s announcement, “Magic and D&D have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.”

While Ayoub has naturally not announced any policy changes or new strategies yet, given that his tenure starts this coming Monday, November 2nd, he does have a general approach in mind. As he notes in the announcement: “We’ll put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital.” Given the uncertainty around the creative industries in general right now, and WotC specifically with the rise of Universes Beyond in Magic, these words are reassuring to hear, but of course only time will tell if they pan out.

For now, all we can do is watch what Ayoub does closely, and hope that he delivers the positive change being promised today. With his established pedigree, and a testimonial from Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks claiming that he “couldn’t think of a better match to lead these businesses,” however, he certainly seems to be off to a strong start.
