Weekly MTG Teases Potential Upcoming 2026 Commander Announcement

Share

After yesterday’s disappointing MTG ban announcement, many players may be looking for answers to Wizards of the Coast’s controversial decisions. Instead of addressing the problematic Basking Broodscale Combo in Modern and other potential issues, Wizards made changes only to Competitive Brawl.

Commander, on the other hand, wasn’t mentioned at all. With Wizards alluding to an announcement since summer and rumors of a recent Commander Panel meeting, some thought we’d see Commander changes this Monday, but that didn’t happen.

Fortunately, to clear up questions caused by MTG’s ban lists, Wizards routinely follows up ban announcements with a WeeklyMTG event that discusses the recent changes, or lack thereof. Here, it was revealed that we may be getting a Commander update before the end of 2026.

Responding to Weekly MTG Twitch chatters asking about a Commander update, host Blake Rasmussen revealed some exciting news for Commander fans. While nothing is truly set in stone, it appears that we’ll be receiving some sort of Commander announcement before the end of 2026:

“So the commander format panel recently met in Renton. They came to the office. It was great. And I talked to Gavin a little bit after that. He said the team is still discussing things. They weren’t ready for this date, but that there is likely some form of announcement coming before the end of the calendar year. So stay tuned for more on that.”

Rasmussen later addressed this again on the show, suggesting the announcement could cover anything from the current banlist to Game Changers, or even changes to Commander Brackets. While the Commander Panel doesn’t seem clear on which changes they want to move forward with right now, addressing any of these items would be a huge deal.

Outside of Commander, Rasmussen also hinted at upcoming updates at Magic Con Atlanta about Regional Championship Qualifier Seasons for 2027. With a strong hint that Wizards intends to reintroduce Pioneer to the competitive circuit, the format will likely have an RCQ season in the future.

For Modern players looking for answers, Carmen Klomparens had something to offer, too. While action wasn’t taken to address Basking Broodscale Combo yesterday because of the ongoing Regional Championship season, November 30th may hold the solution players are looking for. Klomparens strongly suggested that if Basking Broodscale Combo remains an issue by the next ban announcement on November 30th, Wizards may take action against the Modern’s overpowered Eldrazi package.

While these may not be the exact answers players are looking for, this Weekly MTG suggests massive announcements may be coming soon. For future developments, keep an eye on this space.
