For better or worse, with so much going on in 2026, we’re seeing a lot of innovation and churn in Standard. While this doesn’t help with the format’s seemingly ever-growing cost, it does keep things feeling fresh. A recently created Jund Sacrifice deck is the latest example of this freshness, popping out of the blue a few weeks ago.
Now, as this deck has risen to become a top contender, it’s driving a notable price spike. Over the past three months, Lively Dirge has been creeping up and up, steadily becoming surprisingly expensive.
MTG Lively Dirge
Originally released as part of Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Lively Dirge trades versatility for efficiency by increasing its mana cost. Technically, this fundamental principle of Spree spells is true here, but only just. Even if you’re paying the maximum five mana, this card acts as both a tutor and a reanimation engine.
Admittedly, Lively Dirge will only tutor something from the graveyard and reanimate a couple of fairly weak creatures. In a deck that exclusively runs low-cost creatures, however, this card is an absolute godsend.
Given this power, it’s little wonder that Lively Dirge is already fairly popular in Commander. Appearing in both low-cost and reanimation-focused decks, this card can do a ton of work in the right shell. More recently, however, Lively Dirge has been making a name for itself as part of Standard’s Jund Sacrifice deck.
Essentially, this fairly new deck revolves around using effects like

, creating a whole bunch of artifacts is surprisingly easy.
Given the cost of all of these cards, Lively Dirge can easily find one and reanimate any two of your creatures. Whether you’re getting your engine online or reanimating artifact producers, this card is always effective. With that in mind, it’s no wonder it’s a four-of in many decks, driving the price up.
The Price of Performance
Because it’s been fairly well played in Commander, the price of Lively Dirge has been climbing for quite some time. Recently, however, sales have clearly increased, especially over the past few weeks as the Jund Sacrifice deck rose in popularity. This has caused the available supply of Lively Dirge to almost entirely dry up, pushing prices up dramatically.
Just a few months ago, you could have picked up a near-mint copy of Lively Dirge for around $1.27 on average. Now, however, you’d be hard-pressed to find a near-mint copy for anything less than $5.79. This marks a 355% price spike in around three months, but that might just be the start.
Unfortunately, even if you don’t care about the condition of your cards, there aren’t many savings to be had. You can find foil copies for slightly less, around $5.56 on TCGplayer, but those aren’t ideal for tournament play. As such, if you’re looking to build Jund Sacrifice for Standard, non-foil near-mint copies are the way to go.
A Ticking Clock
For better or worse, Lively Dirge and Jund Sacrifice are good now, but not forever. In February 2027, Standard will finally rotate, pushing Outlaws of Thunder Junction and six other sets out of the format. Not only will this cause a massive upheaval to the Standard metagame, but Lively Dirge simply won’t be legal anymore.
While this is still a few months away, it’s hard to ignore the ticking clock hanging over Lively Dirge. That said, because this Spree spell is fairly popular in Commander, its price is unlikely to crash entirely. After all, this card’s price has been climbing for the past year, and while it’s accelerated recently, Commander demand is unlikely to slow.
Realistically, the only thing that would put a dent in the price of Lively Dirge would be a reprint. Sadly, there’s no telling when, or even if, this would happen, as Wizards doesn’t have a clear policy or reasoning behind reprints. As such, we’re kind of just along for the ride for now, watching and waiting to see what happens.
Beyond just watching the price of Lively Dirge, it’ll also be worth tracking the performance of Jund Sacrifice. If this deck keeps putting up strong results and winning events, its core pieces could easily keep climbing. Just how high new Standard staples like Lively Dirge will reach, however, remains to be seen.
