Despite Wizards’ best efforts to make the 2026 MTG release calendar more manageable, this year has still been rather wonky. Thanks to first looks and pre-announcements, it’s rare that a set gets to stay in the limelight for long. Today, we’re seeing yet another example of this trend, as MTG Star Trek has popped up again before Reality Fracture’s release.
MTG Star Trek Beginner Box Canceled
Unfortunately, MTG Star Trek popping up again isn’t good news, as it’s due to an abrupt cancellation. According to Wizards of the Coast, there won’t be a Star Trek Beginner Box anymore, in any region. Notably, this cancellation doesn’t affect any other Star Trek product, though the reasoning behind it is concerning.
In their statement, Wizards said the cancellation was due to “delays in production, logistics, and shipping.” While these aren’t uncommon in MTG nowadays, we’ve not seen them get this bad before. Potentially, we might be about to see heavy delays across MTG Star Trek’s product line, but this is unconfirmed right now.
On social media, some MTG players weren’t entirely convinced supply chain issues were the sole problem. Instead, some suggested printers simply couldn’t keep up with the volume of products being made. Even these players, however, noted that supply chains are a complex business, and we’ve had wars and extreme weather events this year.
Regardless of why this cancellation happened, it’s disappointing that the Star Trek Beginner Box is now gone. Since Universes Beyond sets are designed to bring new players into the game, losing a tutorial-focused product feels like a major blunder. With that in mind, however, it’s unlikely that Wizards took this decision lightly, as canceling any product isn’t exactly good.
The Waiting Game
All in all, we can only really wait and see what happens to MTG Star Trek going forward. Currently, the set’s release date is planned for November 13th, and we likely won’t hear more about any delays until then. Thankfully, we do have Reality Fracture to tide us over till then, so we shouldn’t be bored, at least.
