One of the coolest things about The Hobbit set is the amount of typal support it’s bringing to the table. Dwarf Commander decks in particular were in desperate need of more tools, and this set didn’t hold back. While there are plenty of legendary Dwarves in the set, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk is among the best.
MTG Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk
Like many modern-day MTG Commanders, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk is a value engine and payoff all in one. Not only can Thorin easily create a ton of Treasures, but it rewards you for holding onto them too. Technically, all you need to do is play a bunch of Dwarves with Thorin, and you’ll have a lethal army.
As much as Thorin can do work on its own, naturally including Treasure producers like Magda, Brazen Outlaw can push things further. If this still isn’t enough, token and Treasure doublers like Anointed Procession and Xorn can really get things out of hand. On top of these classic Treasure producers, you can also leverage Blink effects like Ghostway as both protection and Dwarf entry.
Further leaning into Treasure synergies, Professional Face-Breaker and Rain of Riches are naturally auto-includes. The same is true for cards like Craterclaw Colossus to charge your Dwarf army, and Smaug the Magnificent for consistent removal. Notably, however, while Throin makes them, it doesn’t just care about Treasures.
Since any artifact is fair game, cards like Academy Manufactor can pop off insanely hard. This can even open up wins with Hellkite Tyrant.
Extra Support From The Hobbit
Interestingly, as powerful as Thorin is, it also owes a lot of credit to The Hobbit set. While some of the best new Dwarves like Bifur, Melodic Rider require an enduring story to maximize, your Treasures will achieve this super early. From there, you’ll get to double-dip on all of your Dwarves triggers for the rest of the game.
With other new Dwarves, like Thorin, Company’s Leader and Balin, Loremaster, having fantastic triggered abilities, this can get out of hand very quickly. If that’s not fast enough, however, Fili, the Pathfinder and An Unexpected Party can provide even more Dwarves for extra shenanigans.
While some new Dwarves are expensive, between Fili and Kili, Joyous and Gloin the Mighty, playing them isn’t too difficult. At worst, you’ve also got tons of treasures at your disposal to power out massive plays regularly. Thanks to all of this, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk truly makes for one hell of a Commander, easily attacking on multiple fronts.
