Thanks to recent developments from Pro Tour Amsterdam, the Modern metagame is seeing a massive shift. Fast combo decks have risen up to punish the fair decks of old, taking the format by storm. These are fantastic against mainstays like Boros Energy and Izzet Affinity, but their fragility makes them quite vulnerable to metagame developments.
In an effort to make one of these combos more consistent, a new brew combining two different combo decks has started gaining popularity. With multiple league 5-0s under its belt, Cosmogoyf Necrodominance combo looks like a fantastic new Modern option.
MTG Necrodominance Cosmogoyf Combo
Similar to the original Cosmogoyf combo deck, this deck is all about playing an extremely large Cosmogoyf and throwing it at your opponent to win the game. To aid this, Serum Powder and the now-expensive Plunge into Darkness can both find your core pieces while dumping cards into exile. Necrodominance helps here, too, putting extra cards you draw into exile.
This synergy, combined with Rite of Consumption, allows these two combos to work together seamlessly. Even if you don’t have a lethal Cosmogoyf to throw at your opponent, the burst of life lets you draw a ton of cards with Necrodominance. From there, a few Soul Spikes are usually enough to finish things off.
Cosmogoyf aside, Necrodominance’s sheer amount of card draw can enable alternate win conditions, like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse. You also get to run a ton of interactive cards, like Duress and Fatal Push, which provide redundancy if your combo gets stopped. Heck, some lists even run Witherbloom Charm and Requiting Hex, doubling as both lifegain and removal.
Tons of Potential
This new variant is almost an upgrade in every way over the Cosmogoyf Thud decks. While the deck is a bit slower overall, you can still power out turn three kills, easily taking down other fast combo decks. With most 75s having access to six hand disruption spells and Veil of Summer, this slight drop in speed should be more than made up for with your interaction.
Similar to the other fast combo decks, this deck has a fantastic matchup against Boros Energy and Izzet Affinity, the two most popular decks in the format. Force of Despair is particularly nasty against Affinity, taking out Kappa Cannoneer without paying its Ward. Break into Ice also gives this deck tons of tools against Eldrazi Tron decks, which it should naturally outspeed anyway.
Sadly, like every Modern deck, Necrodominance Cosmogoyf is bound to have some bad matchups. Strategies with tons of interaction, like Orim’s Chant control, can still shut down everything this deck is doing. Anti-draw hate like Narset, Parter of Veils stops Necrodominance, while counterspells and Silence effects are usually enough to outpace a couple Duress.
Responding to the Cosmogoyf decks, Burn and Prowess have seen a massive uptick in popularity, punishing how low your life total gets with Plunge into Darkness. Orcish Bowmasters is also starting to see a comeback, punishing Necrodominance hard.
Even with these bad matchups, in theory, this Necrodominance Cosmogoyf deck should beat a majority of the decks in any given event. With it still being very early days for this brew, we’ll have to wait and see how it performs in Modern’s many big upcoming events.
