Bizarre MTG Enchantment That Makes Treasures Cascade Spikes 355% in Price

As is to be expected from a set featuring the treasure-hoarding Smaug, The Hobbit has plenty of Treasure Typal support. Three of the new Smaug cards, in particular, look like slam dunks for this archetype in Commander, which has naturally been driving demand. This, in turn, has pushed the price of Rain of Riches up rather quickly, but there are still some last-minute deals available.

In any Treasure-focused Commander deck, Rain of Riches is an absolute godsend, and it’s easy to see why. Even if it only triggers once per turn, effectively giving any spell Cascade sets up huge value swings. Thanks to the Treasures it provides, you should have no trouble casting spells on your opponents’ turns to get even more triggers.

Realistically, while abusing Rain of Riches is definitely possible, you barely even need to try to make this card worthwhile. Not only does it partially pay for itself with Treasures, but even a couple of Cascade triggers will push it over the top. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that Rain of Riches is an auto-include in a vast array of Treasure-focused decks.

Appearing in over 96,000 decks, according to EDHREC, this card is a staple within Vihaan, Olivia, and Jolene decks. Beyond this, the new Smaug the Magnificent and Smaug the Impenetrable are also responsible for a strong play rate bump. Accounting for around 1,330 and 446 decks respectively, it’s no wonder the price of Rain of Riches has jumped.

As if these two weren’t enough, the new Smaug, Wicked Worm also looks like a fantastic new Treasure-focused Commander. Thanks to this, it feels like demand for Rain of Riches is set to continue as the set’s launch nears. Considering how much prices have already increased in anticipation, this might be your last chance to snag a good deal.

The Spike

MTG Rain of Riches - Price Spike

Thanks to being the most recent reprint, the Bloomburrow Commander variant of Rain of Riches used to be the cheapest. Back in early July, before Hobbit hype really started, you could have picked up a copy for just $1.06. Sadly, after over 400 near-mint sales in the past month, this once budget price point is long gone.

Currently, a near-mint copy of Rain of Riches from the Bloomburrow precons will set you back $4.83, representing a 355% price spike. While this is pretty dear, copies from Streets of New Capenna are selling for $3.74. As if this wasn’t cheap enough, near-mint examples from Outlaws of Thunder Junction are just $2 right now.

While prices are a bit mixed across the board, the more affordable copies are quickly running out. With just a handful of better-priced examples available from New Capenna and Thunder Junction, you might not want to wait. After all, if sales continue as they have been, then prices could easily match the extended art variant, which is going for $7.

Powerful but Plentiful

As much as it seems that Rain of Riches is going to increase in price soon, long-term, it’s more nebulous. While future Treasure-focused cards could easily increase demand, this card is clearly an easy reprint target for Wizards. There’s a high chance, in fact, that this card will pop up in the next Treasure-focused precon, whenever that gets released.

Even though no such precon has been announced just yet, this potential does rain on Rain of Riches’ parade somewhat. After all, even if it becomes properly scarce and expensive soon, new supply should arrive eventually. Whether or not this will actually end up happening, however, is anyone’s guess.

For now, Rain of Riches is definitely an MTG card that’s worth keeping an eye on. If nothing else, it’s a fantastic pickup if you can get a good deal, considering the number of Treasure-focused cards that get made.
