As one of the most famous Dragons in fantasy, it’s fitting that Smaug is a big presence in MTG The Hobbit. Both his mythic headliner variant and his Scene Box incarnation are excellent, offering a ton of potential power in Commander. The Dragon’s rare version, Smaug, Wicked Worm, continues this trend, presenting one of the best Treasure Commanders MTG has ever seen.
Smaug, Wicked Worm MTG
Offering a Dockside Extortionist-esque effect right out of the command zone, Smaug, Wicked Worm can aptly generate tons of treasures. The sheer volume of utility artifacts in Commander makes breaking even with Smaug trivial, and trigger doublers like Panharmonicon easily push it over the edge. While these Treasures do come in tapped, Amulet of Vigor solves this problem, making Smaug seriously scary.
Thankfully, even without Amulet of Vigor, these tapped Treasures are far from useless, as Krark-Clan Ironworks and Professional Face-Breaker can sacrifice them for value. Alongside these, Treasure-staples like Academy Manufactor and Reckless Fireweaver can naturally do tons of work, too. To push these even further, you can even use Smaug with Conjurer’s Closet and Blade of Selves to really churn out Treasures.
With the sheer number of Treasures that Smaug can produce, winning with Revel in Riches is a genuinely viable strategy. You’re no worse off if you don’t hoard your Treasures, however, as Smaug’s second ability turns them into card advantage. With recursive cards like Asgardian Inspiration effectively becoming draw engines, Smaug provides all the fuel you’d ever need.
Overall, Smaug, Wicked Worm is a stellar new Commander for one of the more exciting MTG Commander archetypes of recent years. Throw in utility in the 99 of other lists, like Korvold, Fae-Cursed King, and this feels like one of the more promising MTG The Hobbit legends.
