MTG Spider Man Villain Spikes 801% Due to New Precon Synergies

Share

All four Marvel Super Heroes Commander precons have finally been revealed in their entirety, and each deck features a collection of solid reprints. As is typical with preconstructed decks, however, there are still plenty of upgrades for players to look towards. This is especially true for the Doom Prevails deck, which leans on both Connive and Villain Typal synergies. Thanks to supporting both of these, there’s been a steep uptick in demand for Green Goblin, Nemesis, causing its price to spike.

MTG Green Goblin, Nemesis

Thanks to its two final abilities, Green, Goblin Nemesis is a pretty powerful discard payoff. The threat of flooding the board with Treasures in particular makes this creature scary, even with no other Goblins in the mix. The key to getting this engine going is to pair it with lots of looting effects that can trigger its abilities without putting you down cards.

Fortunately, this is exactly what Doctor Doom, King of Latveria does, making Green Goblin a premium upgrade. Because Green Goblin is a Villain itself, it ensures you’ll get to Connive every turn with Doctor Doom. If that weren’t enough, the Human Noble Villain even rewards you further for discarding lands by draining your opponents. It’s no wonder that Green Goblin has already been added to 758 Doctor Doom decks according to EDHREC.

Outside of its appeal in Doctor Doom decks, Green Goblin sees most of its play in the 99 of Norman Osborn decks for similar reasons. As a whole, though, this creature doesn’t actually make a big splash in Commander until now. This is largely thanks to it being a Scene Box exclusive card, which allows it to slip under the radar.

The Spike

Considering how little attention Green Goblin garnered in Commander leading up to Marvel Super Heroes, it used to be quite cheap. Its near-mint market value was only $1.13 nearly three weeks ago, but that has since skyrocketed following increased demand.

With 57 near-mint copies sold on June 10th alone, the same day the Doom Prevails decklist was revealed, supply dropped dramatically. Now, there are just 27 near-mint listings available, with the lowest being $10.19. This represents an 801% price spike since May 24th.

Notably, there are no other variants of Green Goblin to look towards, and near-mint foils aren’t any cheaper. The same is true for lightly played copies. As such, getting a steal on Green Goblin may prove to be a struggle.

A Tough Spot

As things currently stand, it seems unlikely that Green Goblin, Nemesis’ price will drop anytime soon. Hype for the Doom Prevails precon doesn’t appear to be dying down at all. Plus, as we get closer to the official release of Marvel Super Heroes on June 26th, more players could easily become more invested in finding Commander upgrades.

On top of that, it may take a long time before Green Goblin’s supply resettles. Given that this legend specifically appeared as part of the Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown Scene Box, copies are rather scarce. Even though players can find this card in Collector Boosters as well, the low pull odds don’t help much.

All that being said, there’s a good chance that Green Goblin’s price will fall in the long-term. After all, precon hype typically doesn’t last forever. As we get closer to the release of The Hobbit set on August 14th, players may turn their attention elsewhere. That being said, since we can’t predict the future, we’ll just have to wait and see how things play out.
