MTG Mutant Legend Shuts Opponents Down From Attacking

Share

With such a high intensity of Legends in Marvel Super Heroes, dozens of interesting Commander options are hitting the scene all at once. From new empty deck win conditions to aggressive five-colored options, Marvel Super Heroes has a wide variety of different legends to try.

Thanks to this, Marvel Super Heroes has new Legends for every play style, even the controversial ones. If you want to drag the game out by locking players out by attacking, for example, Storm, Windrider can do just that.

MTG Storm, Windrider

Storm Windrider essentially flips Flying on its head, preventing opponents’ Flying creatures from attacking you or blocking your creatures. While this inherently counters a few Commanders naturally, Storm, Windrider can make any creature fly with her triggered ability.

This makes cheap cards that can target multiple creatures, like Sylvan Paradise and Heaven’s Gate auto-includes in Storm. In addition to acting as a Fog when needed, this can also jump your own creatures, allowing them to benefit from cards like Riona, Angel Wing.

If your plan is to rely on these targeted spells, creatures that want to deal combat damage can create tons of value. When your opponents can’t block, cards like Sergeant Jon Benton and Giant Adephage can quickly take over the game. Alternatively, you can use cards like Toski, Bearer of Secrets or Sword of Feast and Famine to give all your creatures combat damage triggers.

Even if you don’t have a ton of ways to give your opponent’s creatures Flying, Storm makes your own fliers extremely difficult to block. Because of this, beefy Flying bodies, like Sunscorch Regent and Battle Angels of Tyr can pressure your opponents. If you’re planning to take advantage of this, Momo Friendly Flier can become an extremely powerful opening play.

Of course, you can also go the other direction, using Storm as a pillow fort piece to buy time. If this is your plan, cards like Millennium Calendar and Darksteel Reactor, which take a long time to start, become powerful win conditions. In fact, if this is your plan, Storm can shut down attacking completely.

Locking Opponents out from Attacking

By preventing Flying creatures from attacking you, Storm, Windrider can include a lot of classic MTG attack locks in her 99. Magus of the Moat and Storm, for example, will prevent your opponents from attacking you at all. Since Storm can give your own creatures Flying, you can use your targeted spells to keep attacking your opponents, as well.

While Magus of the Moat is the easiest card to include in Storm decks, it’s not the best. If you have the money to spend, Moat offers the same lock, but it is much more difficult to remove. As a third option, Island Sanctuary offers the benefit of being one-sided, but the card draw restriction can cause issues if your opponents remove the lock.

Fortunately, there are plenty of cards that can protect your lock once it’s established. Since Storm is in Selesnya, you get access to cards like Heroic Intervention and Everybody Lives! that can give your lock a lot of resiliency.

Thanks to this, if your plan is to stop your opponents from attacking, Storm, Windrider is likely the best Commander in MTG to accomplish it. The strategy is a bit fragile, but at the right table, you could easily drag a game out for hours.
