The competitive MTG circuit has had its ups and downs in recent years, but the announcement of the 2027 Arena Limited Championship was met with resounding excitement. Draft and Sealed aficionados from all over the world were understandably thrilled to put their skills to the test. Over the last two days, however, qualified players have been put through a whirlwind of emotions.
Bad News, Backlash, and Remedies

When Wizards first revealed the arrival of the Arena Limited Championship, the prize structure was unclear. Given the massive 5,000 gem entry fee and how hard it was to earn a slot, though, it was assumed that the Championship would feature cash prizes.
Yet, following multiple rounds of qualifier events, Wizards revealed this morning that no cash prizes would be awarded. While players could still earn invites to the paper Limited Championship, there was, unsurprisingly, significant backlash.
Players were outraged that this information wasn’t made public before qualifier events started, deeming Wizards’ response “deceitful.” Many others felt that branding the event as a “Championship” rather than a “Qualifier” was also misleading.
The good news, at least, is that the frustration of the MTG community was quickly heard. Following the significant backlash, Wizards provided an update in the Pro Tour Discord server stating that a cash prize pool will be added. We don’t know the exact prize details yet, but there’s no doubt players are relieved by this change.
