Unorthodox Scarcity Pushes MTG Myriad Spell to Spike 329% in Price

Share

Currently, Wizards of the Coast’s relationship with reprints feels a little bit strained. Technically, we’ve got bonus sheets, Commander precons, and Secret Lair drops, but we’re missing the Masters sets of the not-so-distant past. Considering MTG is more popular than ever nowadays, this reduction is definitely frustrating.

To make matters worse, there are also plenty of cards in dire need of a reprint. The mechanically unique Secret Lair cards, for instance, are practically begging for reprints, but they’re not the only ones. Several of the unique cards from the MTG Clue/Cleudo game could also do with a reprint, especially as prices have been climbing recently.

For better or worse, this seems to be exactly what has happened to Corporeal Projection from the MTG Cleudo set. Thanks to one of Secrets of Strixhaven’s many fantastic Commanders, the supply has been stretched thin. This, in turn, has led to a beefy 329% price spike in just one month.

MTG Corporeal Projection

MTG Corporeal Projection

While it has got a whole lot of reminder text, Corporeal Projection is a surprisingly simple MTG card. By giving one or all of your creatures Myriad for two or seven mana, this sorcery is actually pretty efficient. Slap it onto the right creature, and you can get an obscene amount of value out of it.

As always, with Myriad, there are a couple of schools of thought that you can lean into. Either you can copy a massive threat to send it at all your opponents, or copy something with a powerful enters ability. Whichever route you go down, having a turn-ending effect like Obeka, Brute Chronologist will let you keep your Myriad copies around.

Typically, when running Myarid, you really need to lean into these synergies to maximize your value. While this is technically true for Corporeal Projection, you can just Overload it to, hopefully, end the game. With a fairly robust, somewhat synergistic board, copying everything and sending it everywhere should make winning trivial.

Despite this game ending strength, Corporeal Projection only sees play in around 7,500 Commander decks, according to EDHREC. Out of this, the recently released Muddle, the Ever-Changing is responsible for a little over 750 lists. Considering Muddle is essentially the latest Myriad Typal Commander, this uptick in demand is entirely unsurprising.

Even with this new home in mind, however, Corporeal Projection still feels somewhat underplayed. Sure, making it shine might require jumping through a few hoops, but even without insane synergies, this card is strong. That said, while you could technically still call it a sleeper, it’s certainly not priced like one anymore.

The Spike

MTG Corporeal Projection Price Spike

Since Corporeal Projection was only available as part of the Ravnica: Clue/Cluedo Edition, supply has always been rather limited. With only eight Clue Edition boosters in a box, each containing one of 20 new rares, finding a specific card isn’t easy. Thanks to this, even before supply started to get really low, Corporeal Projection was selling for $4.14 back in late April.

In the past week, however, over 80 near-mint copies of Corporeal Projection have been sold, seemingly out of nowhere. With Muddle having been out for a little bit, this demand is likely a coordinated buyout, as there’s next to no supply left. Now, on TCGplayer, there are just five near-mint listings remaining; however, these do offer 88 copies.

If you do like the sound of Corporeal Projection and want to pick up a copy for yourself, sadly, you’ll have to pay dearly for it. The remaining near-mint listings currently start at $19.93. Technically, sales have only peaked at $17.77, but sales were surprisingly consistent at that price point.

Unfortunately, even if you don’t care about the condition of your cards, there aren’t many great savings to be found currently. Moderately played copies of Corporeal Projection, for instance, are going for $16.65, while lightly played copies start at $19.62. At these prices, Corporeal Projection is actually the most expensive new card in the entire Ravnica: Clue Edition set.

The Fall?

Looking ahead, Corporeal Projection is a bit of a weird one. On the one hand, this is a strong and usable MTG card that theoretically fits within a wide variety of Izzet-aligned decks. Couple this fact with its natural scarcity, and it has all the makings of an expensive MTG card. That being said, the actual demand for Corporeal Projection is somewhat suspect.

Notably, while Corporeal Projection is good with Muddle, there’s no new card unlocking some insane synergy with it. The same wasn’t true for Afterlife Insurance, another MTG Clue card that also spiked recently. Thanks to Silverquill, the Disputant, this card spiked up to $17 at its peak, but it’s since fallen to $12.

Without much in the way of natural demand powering the Corporeal Projection price spike, there’s a chance it’ll fall even harder. Supply might be low now, sure, but if copies don’t sell for $19, then the buyout is pointless. As such, prices will have to fall to a point where MTG players are willing to part with their cash, putting them in control of the market.

Ultimately, while we’re familiar with MTG market trends, we can’t accurately predict the future. As such, we’ll just have to watch Corporeal Projection closely to see where it ends up in the long run. Hopefully, if nothing else, this card will end up getting reprinted before too long, but there’s sadly no guarantee about that.
