This week’s MTG ban announcement absolutely shook its various formats to its core. Between Modern’s massive changes and Standard’s lack of them, there are tons for players to talk about. Even Legacy and Pauper have some changes to consume, with old problems and new toys to play with.
Despite having a ban, however, no one cared much about MTG’s forgotten format, Pioneer, and it’s no wonder why. Despite players begging Wizards of the Coast for competitive support for years now, we still haven’t seen a relevant event in over 13 months. Fortunately, as was revealed in today’s Weekly MTG event, that dry spell finally appears to be over.
MTG Pioneer Returns in 2027!

Thanks to a statement from Wizards of the Coast’s Blake Rasmussen, we now know that Pioneer will receive competitive support in 2027, ending the format’s multi-year tournament drought. That said, while this is exciting, we don’t yet know how Pioneer will fit into the competitive schedule.
We could get an entire Regional Championship season dedicated to the format, but Pioneer’s role in 2027 might be a lot smaller. That said, even if we just get a Spotlight Series or two dedicated to Pioneer, it still gives the format’s fans something to look forward to. Similar to Legacy and Vintage’s Eternal Weekend events, having just one high-profile event can make a huge difference. Thanks to having seen no competitive pressure for over a year, Pioneer should also be a brewer’s paradise, offering plenty of opportunities to discover broken strategies.
According to Rasmussen, the MTG Play team is still solidifying competitive plans for 2027, but once they know how Pioneer will fit into them, the announcement won’t be long in coming. Sadly, without an idea of how long these plans will take to solidify, it’s impossible to know when Pioneer’s return will be announced. While this means that eager Pioneer players will have to wait a bit longer, we now know that there’s something to look forward to, at least.
