Recently Released MTG Secret Lair Drops Delayed by Four Weeks

Share

Thankfully, while things got off to a very rough start, Wizards has turned Secret Lair’s limited-run shipping model around recently. Following improvements to predicting demand, we’re no longer seeing drops selling out almost instantly upon release. While this is definitely better than before, we’re now running into a new problem.

Now, rather than selling out immediately, Secret Lair is facing a litany of production problems. This, in turn, has caused a string of delays with several entire Superdrops being pushed back. As if this wasn’t bad enough, however, now the entire Back to School Superdrop has been delayed too.

Despite officially launching a couple of weeks ago on April 27th, the Back to School Superdrop has just been pushed back. Notably, all of these Secret Lair drops are still for sale, and only one has a low stock warning. While this delay doesn’t change the purchaseability of the new drops, MTG players will have to wait longer for them.

According to a new email, shared to Reddit by Bigburito, “production challenges” have pushed shipping dates for this Superdrop back worldwide. Now, North America is set to receive deliveries first, but shipments have been pushed back almost an entire month. Originally, Wizards stated shipping would begin on May 13th, but now that’s been pushed back to June 8th.

As if this wasn’t bad enough, delays in Europe and the United Kingdom are even worse, with shipping dates being pushed back to July 14th. Justifying this delay of over two months, Wizards blamed “broader impacts across production that are affecting multiple releases.” While production problems are often beyond Wizards’ control, this is still an incredibly frustrating development.

To make matters worse, it seems like Wizards of the Coast knew this was going to happen. Back in March, Wizards announced Secret Lair would be beset by continued manufacturing delays. While this shouldn’t make the current delay a surprise, Wizards said they’d be pushing Secret Lair Superdrops back to minimize any potential delays.

Unsurprisingly, given that this attempted solution simply hasn’t worked, MTG players aren’t too happy. On Reddit, players were quick to complain about Wizards refusing to sort this problem and continuing to sell the product instead. Others, meanwhile, highlighted how some past drops still haven’t been shipped, which feels like an extra slap in the face.

Expect the Expected

At this point, while news of delays, especially ones this bad, is annoying, they’re nothing new in MTG. Realistically, this is unlikely to be the last delay we hear about in 2026, too, given all the sets being released. Hell, should a certain new virus become a problem worldwide, then future delays could become inevitable.

For now, we can only hope that future sets and Secret Lair drops won’t end up getting hit by delays. While this is the hope, personally, I wouldn’t put too much faith in it, as clear production problems are an ongoing issue. Notably, Wizards chocablock release schedule won’t actually have an effect on this, since printers always want to be at capacity.
