Just like that, Secrets of Strixhaven has now been out on store shelves for over two weeks. In that time, the set has quickly established itself as a favorite for 2026, with players praising both the setting and the new cards in equal measure. In the latter category, the set is still making an impact even now, with one of its new MTG cards enabling a funky Dimir Combo deck in Modern. While it’s early days, initial results for this spicy brew are promising indeed.

Dimir Combo In MTG Modern

Dimir Combo MTG Modern

In the hands of MTG player May_Chang, a new Dimir Combo deck took 2nd place in the MTGO Modern Showcase Challenge event yesterday. The deck essentially revolves around a pair of Agatha’s Soul Cauldron combos, one of which makes use of Secrets of Strixhaven newcomer Pensive Professor.

If you can give Professor Psychic Frog’s ability with Cauldron, then you can discard a card to put a counter on Professor, thus triggering its ability and drawing a card. By repeating this infinitely, you can draw your entire deck before finishing off with Thassa’s Oracle.

Alternatively, you can grant Fatestitcher’s ability to Gran Gran and one other creature, then tap and untap both infinitely to loot infinite times with Gran Gran. As before, this combo can be finished off with a Thassa’s Oracle, though in this case, you can tap one of your creatures to untap a land and Unearth Oracle if mana is tight.

These combos are the primary win condition for the deck, but they sit on top of a surprisingly solid Dimir Midrange foundation. Psychic Frog is a perfectly reasonable threat in its own right, and you have the Unearth/Abhorrent Oculus package to present an on-board threat early on. Unearth and Fatestitcher do great work outside of the combos, too, letting you recur key pieces and squeeze out extra mana, respectively.

May_Chang tops things off with a very solid interaction suite for a combo deck. Fatal Push is great as always, and Thoughtseize fills double duty as a way to clear the road for a combo turn and a way to discard key pieces. Agatha’s Soul Cauldron is also notable for letting you deal with the likes of Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury when you’re not popping off.

On The Tenure Track?

Dimir Combo MTG Modern Metagame

While it’s always exciting to see a brand-new MTG deck in action, it’s very early days for Dimir Combo in Modern so far. Yesterday’s result was impressive, especially for a debut, but it’s also the only real result the deck has at present. This means it’s tricky to gauge how well the deck will perform out in the wider Modern metagame.

From the limited data that we have available, this deck appears to do well against Belcher, Izzet Prowess, and Jeksai Blink. While Ruby Storm can outpace it, this Dimir Combo deck evidently has some real potential. Currently, it’s unclear how the deck fares against Boros Energy and Affinity right now, which makes its future somewhat suspect.

Ultimately, it’s hard to say right now where Dimir Combo will end up going forward. Though it feels more competitive than many other novel Modern brews we’ve seen, the jury is very much still out on this one.
