Surprise MTG Announcement Teases Upcoming Chaos Vault Drop

What wonders lie within?

If you thought Magic’s hectic reveal schedule was taking a brief break before Marvel Super Heroes in June, you were mistaken. In the interim, it appears that Secret Lair is stepping in to fill the void, with plenty of products on the horizon for the near future. While most of these are known quantities, revealed well in advance, today a new Chaos Vault announcement has thrown a curveball into the MTG community.

A New Chaos Vault Drop On May 11th?

Chaos Vault Announcement MTG

According to a promotional email from Wizards of the Coast, the Chaos Vault will open this coming Monday, May 11th. While it’s nice to get a heads-up, especially compared to past Chaos Vault drops that came literally out of nowhere, this announcement doesn’t tell us anything about the drop itself. There’s no clear Secret Lair drop that this could be, either, adding to the confusion.

Currently, the leading theory is that this will be the drop where we see the other leaked Secret Lair Commander deck for this year. Cards from this drop were leaked back in January, and include some financial heavy hitters like Esper Sentinel and Sensei’s Divining Top. With the release date for the Goblin Storm precon being officially revealed earlier this week, the timing here would make perfect sense.

That said, there’s no guarantee that this will be the case. If anything, the fact that Goblin Storm got an official reveal well in advance of its May 18th release is a mark against this theory. Unfortunately, because the Chaos Vault is chaotic by its very nature, it’s difficult to make any kind of guess outside of this. We’ve seen everything in this range from $1 land drops to literal hats for sale, so there’s really no telling what Monday might bring.

While we have no idea what this new drop will contain, we can be fairly confident about its release time. Past Chaos Vault drops have released at 9AM PT, or 12PM EST, for the most part, so this will most likely be the case here too. If you want a piece of whatever Wizards has been cooking up in its labs of late, be sure to hit up the Secret Lair website before then.
