After last week’s major MagicCon preview panel, most MTG players assumed new reveals would be winding down for a bit. It seems Wizards of the Coast hasn’t turned the spoiler tap all the way off just yet, however. In a surprise reveal, Lucky the Pizza Dog, a wacky new legend from MTG Marvel Super Heroes, was unveiled via a variant comic book cover.

Appearing mainly as a side character in the Hawkeye comics, Lucky the Pizza Dog is the definition of a Universes Beyond deep cut. It’s also a very cute card in terms of both flavor and function, rewarding you for playing Cats, Dogs, and Heroes with a steady stream of Food tokens.
Unfortunately, this ability isn’t hugely compelling, even in a dedicated Cat or Dog deck. Such lists tend to be go-wide token brews, which want to be spending their mana more efficiently than on cracking spare Foods. While it’s nice that Lucky gets to scale up on each end step, rather than just your own, the lack of evasion here makes it underwhelming, even if you can gain life reliably.
Though it’s not massively interesting as a card, the fact that Lucky was revealed via a variant comic book cover certainly is. According to listings from comics news site Bleeding Cool, there are around 20 Magic: The Gathering cover variants planned for June. If Lucky is setting the precedent here, then all 20 of those could represent new card reveals. Whether or not this actually happens, of course, is a complete mystery, but it would be a wonderfully thematic way to usher in Magic’s next Marvel crossover.
