Commander is the perfect format for players to go crazy with unique synergies that they can’t maximize anywhere else. There are tons of cards from throughout Magic’s history that can take over games, so long as you have the right support elements. Eternity Vessel is a great example of this, as while it never had much competitive appeal, it really shines in Commander.
MTG Eternity Vessel

On the surface, Eternity Vessel may not seem like it’s worth the mana investment. After all, you ideally need to be at a high life total when you play it and have lands to follow up with. Fortunately, the payoff for being able to reelevate your life total once Eternity Vessel is in play is higher than you might think.
This is certainly true in decks that profit from paying life. Commanders like Verrak, Warped Sengir and Teval, Arbiter of Virtue, for instance, are at their best when you have plenty of life to pay each turn. Similarly, Eternity Vessel’s presence makes it trivial to utilize card advantage engines like Greed and Erebos, God of the Dead.
While this artifact does get worse when played with lower life totals, adding charge counters can help rejuvenate its potential. Dedicated charge counter-themed Commanders like Inspirit, Flagship Vessel as well as Proliferate engines like Evolution Sage do the trick. Going further, Vorel of the Hull Clade and other counter doublers quickly set up your land drops to raise your life total significantly
If that weren’t enough, there are even cards like Sin, Unending Cataclysm that threaten to convert all these charge counters into on-board stats. Having access to an artifact with a bunch of charge counters in play is more valuable than you might expect, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Popping Off with Alternate Win Conditions

Interestingly, Eternity Vessel also shines as an enabler for multiple alternate win conditions, such as Darksteel Reactor. So long as you stick Eternity Vessel while your life total is twenty or higher, all you need is a way to transfer its charge counters to Darksteel Reactor. Luckily, Dismantle, Resourceful Defense, and Moxite Refinery all get the job done.
For added consistency, you can turn Eternity Vessel into a copy of Darksteel Reactor via Saheeli, Sublime Artificer or True Polymorph. Alternatively, Twenty-Toed Toad can be used in place of Reactor, alongside Moxite Refinery and Resourceful Defense specifically.
If you’d rather win through more traditional means, you can use All Will Be One alongside Eternity Vessel for a damage-based kill. All you have to do to set this up is have more life than an opponent, which isn’t a huge ask, either.
A Cool Design
Ultimately, while Eternity Vessel is a bit clunky, its wide range of applications makes it quite a fun Commander card. There just aren’t any cards like it that can fill its role, especially as a combo enabler. This makes it a bit surprising that it only sees play in 11,100 decks, according to EDHREC.
The bad news is that this Zendikar mythic has no reprints to speak of. As such, the artifact still holds a near $19 price tag in spite of its low level of demand. Nonetheless, the uniqueness of this design makes it a worthy pickup for Commander players that like thinking outside the box.
