Wizards Unveils New MTG Infinity Stone Alongside New Marvel Cards

Share

At this year’s MagicCon: Las Vegas, Wizards of the Coast didn’t hold back with the reveals. Tons of details about Reality Fracture were dropped, and we even got to see a bunch of The Hobbit spoilers. Curiously, despite it being the next set on the docket, MTG Marvel Super Heroes got surprisingly little love.

In total, Wizards only revealed three new MTG Marvel cards at MagicCon: Las Vegas. This might seem pretty disappointing; however, it’s hard not to get excited about a new MTG infinity stone. Even though we’ve known this card would be coming for a while, The Mind Stone definitely doesn’t disappoint.

MTG The Mind Stone

Much like The Soul Stone from MTG Spider Man, The Mind Stone is a new two-mana Indestructible mana rock. As with its predecessor, this infinity stone can also be Harnessed to give you a free, repeatable flicker effect. So long as you don’t mind the somewhat steep cost to get this effect, this will enable tons of shenanigans.

Once Harnessed, for instance, you can use Archaeomancer and Time Warp to get infinite turns with The Mind Stone. While this is already a combo that Soulherder can pull off, having extra redundancy is always welcome, especially in Commander. For better or worse, there’s a good chance that The Mind Stone will end up being relegated to this format, honestly.

While a two-mana mana rock isn’t awful, in Standard, that’s easily outclassed by green’s current ramp suite. On top of this, the six mana needed to Harness it is too much for many decks unless they’re going long with control. Potentially, this could be where the card sees play, in a grindy Azorius Control deck, but that’s hardly guaranteed.

Even if The Mind Stone doesn’t appear anywhere in competitive formats, this MTG card will still be very expensive. A white-aligned mana rock with huge upside will be an auto-include in tons of decks, not just flicker-focused ones. Thanks to this, it could easily end up selling for $60+, like The Soul Stone.

Since The Mind Stone is also getting a cosmic foil variant, it will also be the chase headliner of this MTG Marvel set. While your chances of finding this ultra-rare foil will be incredibly low, this variant could sell for tens of thousands of dollars. As the rest of the infinity stones get released, they might just get more expensive, too.

MTG The Vision

MTG The Vision

Sadly, the other main Marvel Super Heroes MTG card that we saw today isn’t nearly as exciting as The Mind Stone. That being said, The Vision isn’t all bad, as it can technically boost Spellslinger decks in Commander. By turning one noncreature spell into a cantrip every turn, it’s easy to see how The Vision generates value.

Sadly, Spellslinger decks already have better ways to facilitate card draw, like Archmage Emeritus. While these cards are the same price, and The Vision is more durable, Emeritus being uncapped means there’s no competition. Ultimately, this may mean that The Vision struggles to see much play outside of Marvel-themed decks.

Considering this card doesn’t cut the mustard in Commander, there’s also not much hope for it competitively. It should do decent work in Limited, at least, but that’s really the bottom of the barrel for playability. If nothing else, The Vision does have neat flavor, at least, but sadly, flavor doesn’t win games…

MTG Vision, Synthezoid Avenger

MTG Vision, Synthezoid Avenger

Thankfully for fans of Vision, the Commander version of the card is a significant upgrade over its main set counterpart. Not only is the flavor improved here, since Vision, Synthezoid Avenger can fittingly Phase Out, but that’s a massive power upgrade too. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, this Vision also has better scaling, which doesn’t rely on other cards.

Thanks to their Phasing ability, Vision, Synthezoid Avenger can dodge most forms of instant speed removal. If this isn’t necessary, however, then you can buff it instead, turning it into a substantial threat. This should let Vision do real work in Artifact-focused decks, Voltron lists, and even Control decks that want an evasive threat.

That’s All Folks

Considering Marvel Super Heroes is set to be released on June 26th, only seeing three cards from it today does seem strange. In theory, it won’t be too too long before this set’s spoiler season starts, after all. That being said, we’ve still got to get through May until that happens, and it doesn’t look like much is planned until then.

With how often we’re inundated with spoilers and left without time to properly enjoy a set, however, this might be a blessing. In fact, Secrets of Strixhaven is a fantastic set to get extra time in the spotlight, as it’s one of the best in years. Hopefully, the next few weeks will let players truly enjoy this release; however, don’t be too surprised if spoilers do end up sneaking in early.
