4-Card Marvel Super Heroes Leak Teases New Mechanic

Share

Now that Secrets of Strixhaven is officially released, it appears that MTG is already prepared to move away from the set. With MagicCon: Las Vegas in less than a week, all kinds of incredible spoilers are just around the corner. While players were bound to see lots of Marvel Super Heroes cards here, some of them may have come early thanks to an unexpected leak.

MTG Marvel Superheroes Leaks

Allegedly appearing at a Draft for the set, four Marvel Super Heroes uncommons have surfaced right before MagicCon: Las Vegas. All of these uncommons showcase iconic characters from the Marvel franchise, offering flavorful takes on familiar names.

Agent Maria Hill is certainly the most interesting card, but, sadly, we don’t really know what she does yet. Teamwork appears to be a new mechanic coming in Marvel Superheroes, but none of the spoiled cards explain what it is. Considering that this Hero offers a scaling body and card draw at one mana, however, Maria Hill certainly has potential.

While not nearly as impressive, Ronin, Shadow Stalker is an interesting design. Offering life-based ramp for equipment and removal in a pinch, many players are intrigued with the idea of a mono-black equipment Commander. Sadly, while the unique design space is interesting, Ronin’s color identity makes him borderline unplayable. Without cards like Sigarda’s Aid to support him, Ronin’s mediocre abilities aren’t enough to save him.

The other two leaked uncommons, while flavorful, are pretty straightforward. Iron Man, Master of Machines offers a sidegrade for the scaling bodies that Affinity-esque Commander decks already play. Considering it draws cards, however, it might be worth running in decks that can support its color identity. Thor Odinson is certainly the least exciting of the group, as a French Vanilla creature. Without Haste, Thor won’t stand up in 2026’s MTG, despite having double Prowess for five mana. While players are glad that this isn’t an Izzet card, it probably wouldn’t have mattered.

If I Had a Nickel…

While the Marvel Super Heroes leaks are interesting, they continue a worrisome trend that players are growing tired of. After MTG TMNT cards showed up at Lorwyn Eclipsed prerelease, this is the second set in-universe set in a row where Universes Beyond cards were found in the product. While this is understandably very frustrating, so far, this is a significantly smaller leak than revealing every rare and mythic in the set prematurely.

Hopefully, these leaks start to happen a bit less frequently, but, honestly, that seems unlikely. With MTG releasing more sets than ever, we’re also seeing more quality control errors than ever. This may not even be the last of the Marvel Super Heroes leaks, as there could be more cards hidden in Secrets of Strixhaven boosters. Only time will tell for sure, but hopefully, this will be the last batch of Marvel Superheroes cards we see before MagicCon: Las Vegas.
