Commander Kitten Spikes to $50 Thanks to New Two-Card Infinite Combo

Share

Now that the spoiler season for Secrets of Strixhaven is basically over, it’s plain to see how strong this set is. Not only are there plenty of soon-to-be constructed staples, but there are tons of Commander gems too. Between the cycle of spells with Paradigm and the new Emeritus cards, it’s hard not to be excited about this set.

With the quintet of Commander decks bundled on top of these, Secrets of Strixhaven is already in contention for the best set of 2026 crown. Despite this, the MTG financial markets have been somewhat slow to react to all of the exciting new cards and possibilities. That said, while things appear slower than usual, some classic Commander cards that can exploit new synergies have still crept up in price.

MTG Displacer Kitten

Displacer Kitten

From the moment it was released in Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate, it was clear Displacer Kitten was powerful. Offering an easily repeatable and abuseable flicker effect on a stick, this card is comically easy to break. With tons of combos and general utility, it’s no wonder that Displacer Kitten is a staple in Commander.

Appearing in over 210,000 decks, according to EDHREC, Displacer Kitten is insane with any powerful enters ability. Alongside Kefka, Court Mage or Atraxa, Grand Unifier, for instance, the value you can get is obscene. This is also true for the new Emeritus of Ideation, from Secrets of Strixhaven.

Since Emeritus of Ideation gets prepared whenever it enters, it’s a fantastic flicker target for Displacer Kitten. Notably, casting Ancestral Recall when prepared counts as a non-creature spell, making it repeatable, so long as you have enough mana. Speaking of mana, the new Blazing Firesinger can even create infinite mana, thanks to its Seething Song coming pre-Prepared.

Alongside Emeritus of Ideation, the rest of the Emeritus is also fantastically powerful with Displacer Kitten. While using these other options does require you to be off color, the potential for value is nonetheless obscene. Thanks to this, many MTG players have seemingly been investing in Displacer Kitten, while influencers point toward it.

Unsurprisingly, all of this extra attention has led to a pretty significant price spike to Displacer Kitten. As a staple in Commander, this has long been an expensive card, but now its price has shot up to a new all-time high. Worryingly, unless the card gets reprinted soon, this could just be the start.

The Most Expensive Kitten

MTG Displacer Kitten Price Spike

Due to strong demand for Commander, Displacer Kitten has always been fairly expensive. At its lowest, this was still a $10 card, but it has been climbing over the past year. Thanks to this, Displacer Kitten was selling for between $23 and $27 in early March, depending on the printing.

Now, however, copies of Displacer Kitten have routinely been going for $50, as supply has been drained massively. Following a surge of over 100 default frame sales in the past few days, there are now just six near-mint listings left on TCGplayer. Prices for these copies now start at $49.99; however, default frame sales have only peaked at $43.

Curiously, despite arguably being less despicable, the white border printing of Displacer Kitten has actually sold for more. With peak sales hitting $49.50 and new listings starting at $50, this is almost the chase variant. Currently, that honor actually goes to the Secret Lair variant of Displacer Kitten, which is now priced at $64.

Sadly, if you still want to pick up a copy of Displacer Kitten, there aren’t really any cheaper pritings right now. At best, the extended art variant is going for $49, but that’s a pretty meager saving. If you don’t mind worse condition copies, then there are a few lightly-played default frame examples; however, even these are $42+.

Thanks to this impressive price increase, Displacer Kitten is now the second most expensive cat in MTG. Right now, the card is only behind Slashing Tiger, which is only expensive due to its rarity. Even then, however, it might not be long before Displacer Kitten ends up usurping this Reserved List card.

The Reprint Roulette

For better or worse, Displacer Kitten is so good that it being expensive, even the most expensive cat, is entirely deserved. With powerful new enters cards being introduced with basically every set, demand rarely ever decreases. Due to this, there’s a very real chance that Displacer Kitten will simply get more and more expensive as time goes on.

While it feels inevitable that Displacer Kitten will climb in price, long-term, it may dip in the coming months. Since demand has largely been fueled by MTG content creators, it’s unlikely to be sustainable for too long. Similarly, if investors have played a big role in the buyout, supply returning to the market could cause a crash.

Ultimately, as always, it’s impossible to predict exactly which way the future will go with any certainty. That being said, if anything is clear, it’s that this card desperately needs a reprint. While the white-border printing in Mysterty Booster 2 helped out, there are still not enough copies available.

Sadly, there’s no telling if, or when, Displacer Kitten will end up being reprinted. Realistically, we could easily be waiting a year or two for a reprint to happen, especially since we’re basically just relying on bonus sheets now. For now, all we can do is hope that this hypothetical reprint will arrive sooner rather than later.
