$1.20 MTG Jumpstart Commander Generates Absurd Value By Copying Abilities

Share

In Commander, many games can be decided by which player can generate the most value. If you can continue to pull ahead on cards while keeping up on the board, you put yourself in good shape to win. Sadly, Boros can struggle to participate in attrition battles, putting it on the back foot out of the gate. If you want to play the aggressive color combination anyway, Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier might be one of your stronger picks.

MTG Agrus Kos, Eternal Soldier

At its core, Agurs Kos, Eternal Soldier gets nearly all of its value from its triggered ability. Borrowing elements from Zada, Hedron Grinder, you want to target this Commander with your abilities and spread them across your creatures.

To help go wide, you’ll want to utilize numerous mass token producers. Assemble the Legion and Finale of Glory are perfect examples of cards that can singlehandedly flood the board. After they’ve been established, Anointed Procession, Elspeth, Storm Slayer, and other token doublers can massively accelerate your development.

Once you have a big board presence, all of your single-target abilities become much scarier. To help push damage, Duke, Uklder Ravengard, and Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink can copy of your whole squad. From here, just target Agrus Kos with Elspeth, Knight-Errant or Thundering Raiju, setting up a lethal attack.

Notably, targeting Agrus Kos with Duke or Orthion also helps retrigger all of your enters effects from creatures like Karmic Guide and Solitude. The same can be said of Teleportation Circle, which can blink your entire board. Throw in some trigger-doubling effects like Strionic Resonator to target Agrus Kos’s trigger with, and this Commander can pop off hard.

To keep the value train rolling, copying abilities of simple permanents like Bagel and Schmear or Basilica Skullbomb can draw you a boatload of cards. This way, even if an opponent has a board wipe, you have the necessary resources to rebuild. Of course, the abilities of Haystack and Fanatical Devotion are capable of protecting your entire army when necessary.

Intriguing Combos

If winning the game by creating a wide board isn’t powerful enough for your table, Agrus Kos also has a few game-winning infinite combos. So long as you have mana dorks that can generate four mana, Agrus Kos, Zealous Conscripts, and The Peregrine Dynamo can win the game by creating infinite mana.

To start, tap your mana creatures and float four mana. Then, cast Zealous Conscripts, and target Agrus Kos using its ability. Now with Agrus Kos’ trigger on the stack, use Peregrine Dynamo to copy Agrus Kos’ trigger. You’re now free to resolve this copy of Agrus Kos’ ability, copying Zealous Conscripts’ untap ability and untapping all of your creatures. This enables you to float more mana and reactivate Peregrine Dynamo, targeting Agrus Kos’s activated ability that’s still on the stack.

On top of this combo, there are also a handful of four-card combos for those feeling adventurous. By combining Agrus Kos, The Jolly Balloon Man, Orthion, Hero of Lavabrink, and a mana-generating sacrifice outlet like Phyrexian Altar, you can make infinite mana as well as infinite tokens with Haste.

Underplayed and Cheap

Even if you choose not to incorporate any infinite combos, Agrus Kos still easily pulls its weight as a Commander. This legend also offers more flexibility than you might expect, since it serves as a strong Blink and Tokens build-around. Despite this, the Commander accounts for only 995 decks according to EDHREC.

Fortunately, the Spirit Soldier’s lack of demand has helped it maintain a low price tag. Even though this creature has only appeared in a Jumpstart product, it sits comfortably between $1 and $1.50. So, if you’re looking for a unique Boros Commander that can excel in grindy games, Agrus Kos is a solid budget option to consider.
