Over the past few months, Premodern has experienced a massive growth in popularity. Even with no new cards entering the format, thanks to the sheer amount of attention Magic Online created, the metagame has stayed fresh with plenty of room for innovation.
At this point, Premodern has even become the driving force behind a handful of major MTG price spikes. Many old designs that lack reprints have risen in price as their demand has soared, and Morphling appears to be next in line.
MTG Morphling

Compared to many top-tier threats today, Morphling may not seem quite up to snuff. In an era of power creep, this Shapeshifter feels quite clunky, especially when you factor in that each activated ability requires mana to utilize.
In the context of Premodern, however, Morphling still has plenty of value. There aren’t many threats in Premodern that can singlehandedly take over a game, and Morphling certainly fits that bill. Besides being a big, evasive attacker, this creature’s third activated ability makes it immune to spot removal as long as you have mana to spare. As such, if you can ever land Morphling on an empty board in the late game, your opponent is in a world of trouble. With this in mind, Morphling commonly shows up in small numbers in the sideboard of various blue decks, including Azorius Standstill and Stiflenought.
Outside of the card’s Premodern appeal, Morphling does still show up in some Commander decks. This Shapeshifter pairs particularly nicely with legends like Mairsil, the Pretender and Rex, Cyber-Hound that can gain Morphling’s activated abilities. Unsurprisingly, though, Morphling’s Commander utility is quite narrow, hence why the card only appears in 2,400 decks.
The Spike

For at least the past year, near-mint copies of Morphling have consistently hovered above $10. Even with demand not being super high, the overall lack of supply for the creature has helped it maintain a somewhat hefty price tag.
Since January of 2026, however, Morphling’s price has continued to rise as its Premodern demand has increased. Not only have multiple lightly played sales in the last week hovered around $40, but there are currently only four near mint listings available, starting at $52.21 with shipping. With the only other variant available being the scarcer foil Judge Promo whose lowest listing in any condition sits at nearly $80, picking up a copy of Morphling in great condition for cheap is difficult.
The good news, at least, is that there are some copies in worse conditions on sale for a decent discount. At the time of writing, there’s a heavily played listing on TCGplayer for $29.46, and a damaged copy for $24.38, including shipping. Still, even these sale prices are higher than they were just a few days ago, showcasing the major impact Premodern’s rising demand has had on the market.
Moving Forward
As things currently stand, there’s little indication that Morphling’s price should fall anytime soon. After all, this card’s value has continued to rise over the last month, and Premodern’s popularity spike shows no signs of slowing. On top of that, unlike some other recent Premodern-based spikes, there’s no hope for Morphling to earn a bonus sheet reprint.
The one saving grace is that Morphling doesn’t garner a ton of attention in other formats, and most commonly shows up in Premodern decklists as a one-of. This card could easily fall off in Premodern as a result, especially following a ban. After all, Stiflenought is on the watchlist, and a potential nerf to Premodern’s top blue deck could reduce Morphling’s utility further.
Ultimately, with so many unknown factors, accurately predicting Premodern-based spikes like Morphling’s is nearly impossible. We’ll just have to hang tight and see how things play out.
