Overlooked Lorwyn Eclipsed Mana Rock Is a Soon-To-Be Staple

Share

Unlike most of the traditional Magic sets that came before it, Lorwyn Eclipsed spoiler season was extremely condensed. As a result, many cards, especially the commons and uncommons, fell under the radar.

Yet, hidden within these low rarity cards are numerous EDH staples and MTG designs that are extremely unique. None fit the mold better than a Kindred mana rock poised to make its presence felt across numerous typal shells.

MTG Firdoch Core

Like many three-mana rocks, Lorwyn Eclipsed’s Firdoch Core taps for a mana of any color. While the creature ability of this card isn’t very relevant outside of limited, this card’s Changeling subtype is quite interesting.

This means that even though Firdoch Core isn’t a creature, it will trigger new typal legends like High Perfect Morcant or Maralen, Fae Ascendant when it enters. Similarly, anytime you tap the artifact for mana, Magda, Brazen Outlaw will trigger without you even having to enter combat. The typal synergies are at their best in decks featuring Eminence Commanders like The Ur-Dragon and Edgar Markov, which provide extra value even before you’ve gotten to cast the legend.

It’s not even out of the question that this card could show up in Constructed. Three-mana rocks are almost always too clunky to see play, but this card’s synergy with Valley Floodcaller grants a mana outlet that’s immune to creature removal. It even sets up Goblin Grenade nicely in a Pauper setting.

MTG Prismatic Undercurrents

Despite being a simple uncommon, Prismatic Undercurrents also looks powerful enough to see a lot of EDH play following release. Lands decks can easily leverage Exploration effects, especially when partnered with Crucible of Worlds. Similarly, legends like Szarel, Genesis Shepherd, and Omnath, Locus of Rage are built to abuse these Prismatic Undercurrents.

In any multicolor shell, you should have no problem searching for at least a couple lands with this effect, but there are some additional synergies. Some effects, like Transguild Courier and Tam, Mindful First-Year Commander decks, can fully abuse Prismatic Undercurrents despite only featuring two colors.

MTG Shimmerwilds Growth

As a whole, Shimmerwilds Growth is extremely similar to cards like Fertile Ground that continue to see play in Enchantress EDH decks like Sythis, Harvest’s Hand and Tuvasa, the Sunlit. Shimmerwilds Growth, however, puts a unique spin on the classic “enchant land” design by turning that land into the color of your choice. This is clearly designed to bolster the Vivid mechanic, which does have some value in Commander. While niche, this allows you to pair this enchantment with cards like Red Elemental Blast to destroy your opponent’s lands.

MTG Blossombind

Blossombind is Lorwyn Eclipsed’s version of Claustrophobia. For two mana, you get a solid piece of removal that may look quite bland on the surface. Yet, there are two key parts to this card that make it a very interesting template for potential future mechanics.

First and foremost, rather than simply preventing the enchanted creature from untapping during its controller’s untap step, Blossombind keeps the creature tapped permanently, which is a significant upgrade. From there, the final line of text makes Blossombind even more intriguing. By preventing counters from being able to be placed on the enchanted creature, your opponent can’t use the body as a means to take advantage of Blight cards like Dose of Dawnglow. This makes Blossombind a significantly stronger tool in Lorwyn Eclipsed Limited.

All in all, even if some of these cards prove too mana-intensive to see lots of play, especially in a Constructed setting, it’s cool to see Wizards experimenting with some of these new tools.
