MTG Spider Man Value Engine Sleeper Unexpectedly Wins $50,000 Tournament

Share

Since its release, MTG Spider Man has received plenty of criticism. Multiple factors, including the Limited environment and confusion surrounding the Through the Omenpaths card variants, have caused many players to turn their attention away from the set.

Yet, for a small set, MTG Spider Man continues to have an impact both in Constructed and Commander. In fact, this weekend, a unique artifact that has barely made a dent in Constructed up to this point managed to show up in multiple winning decklists at SCG Con Atlanta, including taking down the main event for a $10,000 prize. It pairs nicely with a major MTG Avatar mechanic and is finally starting to get some love.

Interdimensional Web Watch MTG

By itself, Interdimensional Web Watch is nothing special. While its triggered ability can pull you ahead on resources, four mana is a lot to spend on glorified Wrenn’s Resolve. The Web Watch will help you cast the cards it exiles, but can be difficult to use past this.

For decks that can continue getting extra mileage out of the mana burst, however, this effect becomes very appealing. EDH decks centered around legends like Nathan Drake, Treasure Hunter or Prosper, Tome-Bound that provide a flow of card advantage in exile can make excellent use out of Interdimensional Web Watch.

Additionally, mechanics like Warp and Foretell all synergize with Interdimensional Web Watch’s mana production. For that reason, this artifact is an elite inclusion in Tannuk, Steadfast Second decklists, making it easier to recast artifacts and red spells you cheat into play. The card similarly synergizes with the new Airbending mechanic, and has broken out alongside it at Spotlight Series: The Avatar.

Constructed Applications

Badgermole Cub

The Bant Airbending decklists that boasted undefeated results in a ReCQ, the Uncut Sheet side event, and the main event weren’t identical, but they had some important similarities. Each decklist incorporated a heavy ramp theme that hasn’t been present in most Bant Airbending decklists up to this point. Llanowar Elves, Gene Pollinator, and Badgermole Cub all make it easier to get to cast the deck’s potent four and five-mana plays.

This, of course, includes Interdimensional Web Watch, which adds a strong fair element to the classic Airbending combo shell. This immediately enables an Airbent card on impact, getting around the normal downside of these do-nothing ramp cards. In attrition battles, even getting to use the mana ability to hard cast Quantum Riddler out of exile makes it easier to double spell.

This synergy has also helped Interdimensional Web Watch appear in some Temur Battlecrier Combo decklists. While this deck’s popularity has ultimately died down in recent weeks, it’s not out of the question that it could experience a resurgence at some point in the future. It’s nice to ultimately see this Spider Man utility artifact showcase its potential in glorious fashion.
