Budget Craterhoof Alternative Spikes 296% Due To New Lorwyn Eclipsed Commanders

Well, look who's blown into town!

Now that Lorwyn Eclipsed preview season is over, we’re starting to see the set make ripples in the secondary market. While new mechanics like Blight are driving some of this action, it’s the set’s Commander precons that are stealing the show right now. Both Blight Curse and Dance of the Elements look incredibly fun and powerful, and players are snapping up potential upgrades for both as a result. Rumbleweed is the latest beneficiary of this rising financial tide and is experiencing a huge MTG price spike at the moment.

If you’re a long-time Commander aficionado, Rumbleweed will look very familiar. It’s essentially a toned-down take on classic green finisher Craterhoof Behemoth. It offers a static +3/+3 buff instead of a scaling one, and it lacks Haste, so it can’t add to your pressure like Craterhoof can. On the other hand, it packs a built-in mana discount, which means you can potentially cast it for far less than Craterhoof.

Since its release in the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander precons, Rumbleweed has had a relatively modest career. According to EDHREC, the card has only been added to 19,000 decks in total, the majority of which are decks led by Commanders from the precon it was printed in. The card does see some use in Landfall/Self-Mill lists, like The Necrobloom and Six, but not a ton.

Now, since Rumbleweed pairs perfectly with both Ashling, the Limitless and Mass of Mysteries, there’s been a sudden spike in demand. Ashling lets you Evoke it out for just four, then copy it on death, buffing your whole board by +6/+6 and netting you a Hasty 8/8 for the turn. Rumbleweed’s cost reduction applies to the four generic Evoke cost, as well, meaning it’s very possible to pull this off for zero mana.

Rumbleweed is arguably even better with Mass of Mysteries. With Myriad, a single swing with the card will put an extra 22/22 in stats in play, and buff all of your non-Rumbleweed creatures by +6/+6 to boot. These synergies make the card one of the best upgrades for Dance of the Elements, which explains its rising price at the moment.

The Spike

Rumbleweed first saw a surge in interest when leaks revealed Ashling, the Limitless early. Owing to the potent synergy between the two, 137 copies of the card were sold on TCGplayer that day. Following this, when the full decklist for Dance of the Elements was revealed, the demand for Rumbleweed increased sharply.

Today, Rumbleweed is sitting at around $1.03 for a near-mint copy. This isn’t a huge price tag by any means, but considering the card was just $0.26 a month ago, it represents a price spike of around 296%. You can still find a few copies for sale around the $0.90 mark, but for the most part, things are trending towards $1 and up at present. The pool of supply is starting to dry up, too, with only 40 near-mint listings for the card available on TCGplayer at present.

Since Rumbleweed has only been printed in a single precon, there’s not a lot of extra supply to buffer this spike. It’s worth noting, however, that the card’s extended art printing is more affordable right now. There are still 88 near-mint listings for this version available, and, while it has seen a price spike of its own, it’s sitting at $0.60 rather than $1. While this isn’t a massive difference for now, it could easily turn into one, depending on how this price spike progresses.
