By now, Magic players have the Secret Lair bonus card routine down to a fine art. Each new drop brings with it at least one of these mysterious extra cards, which Wizards doesn’t typically reveal beforehand. As such, there’s a lot of hype around players actually receiving their drops so these cards can be shared with the world.
Unfortunately, that hype often turns to disappointment later, as bonus cards are often duds. This week, in which the MTG Avatar Secret Lair bonus cards were finally revealed, was a classic example of this.
The MTG Avatar Secret Lair Bonus Cards

So far, two different bonus cards have been revealed for the MTG Avatar Secret Lair superdrop: Command Tower and Fellwar Stone. While both are undeniable staples in the majority of Commander decks, they’re also deeply unexciting picks. Command Tower is a $0.20 card on the low end, while Fellwar Stone isn’t much better at $0.70. These aren’t cards that are going to substantially up the value of your Avatar drops, in other words.
On top of that, these are also cards we’ve seen a ton of in general in recent years. Command Tower, in particular, seems to have become synonymous with Secret Lair lately. If the card isn’t in a drop itself, it’s probably a bonus card there. Fellwar Stone isn’t quite as overdone, but it’s still a card with 38 distinct printings and a regular fixture in Commander precon decks.
These are fairly disappointing bonus cards overall, then, and players have been saying as much on social media for the past few days. While it’s technically possible that there’s another, more impressive rare bonus card for this superdrop, it seems very unlikely at present. A lot of different players have shared their bonus card drops, and these are the only two that have cropped up. This includes players who have bought one of each drop, too. If there’s a rare bonus card here, it must be really rare.
Overall, these lackluster new bonus cards are disappointing, but unsurprising. Exciting bonus cards have been the exception and not the norm for a while now, and Avatar doesn’t buck this trend.
