At today’s MagicCon: Atlanta preview panel, we got a veritable smorgasbord of new MTG info. Not only did we get a ton of Lorwyn: Eclipsed spoilers, but we also got the roadmap for the next year of sets. While one elusive Universes Beyond set remains unknown, the rest of the MTG sets for 2026 are now confirmed.
As expected, most of these new reveals are Universes Beyond sets. We’ve got a new Marvel release, a new Tolkien set, and a sci-fi wildcard. To top it off, the long-awaited climax to the current in-universe story arc has also been named. While we don’t have any spoilers for these sets just yet, it’s great to see where Magic is headed as the Universes Beyond era enters its sophomore year.
Marvel Super Heroes
Arriving in June 2026, the first of the new MTG sets we saw today was Marvel Super Heroes. We knew we’d be getting at least one Marvel set next year, so the real question was which hero or team it would focus on. Turns out the answer is ‘pretty much all of them.’
We saw 10 pieces of art in total from the set today, covering a wide range of different Marvel franchises. The Fantastic Four made an appearance, alongside Captain America, Iron Man, Nick Fury, and Squirrel Girl. Marvel’s villains are getting some nice representation here, too. Killmonger, Thanos, Loki, and MODOK all show up in various pieces of art. Whether these characters are all getting their own cards remains to be seen, but the scope of this set is clearly massive.
It’s a bit of a contrast to Spider Man, which was laser-focused on a single franchise. This should avoid the issue of too many variants of the same character we saw with that set. If anything, the opposite may well be true here. ‘Marvel Super Heroes’ is an incredibly broad topic, so we may see some fan favorites omitted, like what occurred in Final Fantasy. In any case, we’ll almost certainly see another Infinity Stone here, as well as possible reprints of the mechanically-unique Marvel Secret Lair cards.
The Hobbit
As hinted at in a video a few days ago, we’re getting a full set for The Hobbit next year. This will be arriving in August 2026, a little over three years after the first Lord of the Rings expansion. As a set prospect, this is both exciting and a little worrying.
On one hand, Wizards did a fantastic job with the license the first time around. Getting to see them tackle the iconic scenes of The Hobbit, by extension, should be great. This is also a prime opportunity to reprint some of the pricier cards from that set. Both The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters would fit perfectly well here, for example.
On the other hand, The Hobbit is a much shallower well than Lord of the Rings. As we saw with the Peter Jackson trilogy, stretching that material out to the same length can cause issues. Clearly Wizards is confident that they have enough to work with, but we could have another Spider Man situation on our hands here.
In any case, the early artwork revealed today looks excellent. We only saw a few pieces, but Smaug, the party of dwarves, and Gollum all feel just as they should here. It’s a promising start, but we’ll see how it all pans out come August.
Reality Fracture
It’s not all Universes Beyond sets for MTG in 2026, of course. We also got the name of the set that wraps up the multi-year story arc we’ve been following in-universe recently. This set will be known as Reality Fracture, and it’s coming in October 2026.
Details are low on the ground for this set right now. Unlike the other sets announced today, we didn’t get any artwork for this one. All we have is the logo above, and the tagline “The Multiverse meets its match.” Chances are the story will end up in some kind of ‘colliding planes’ situation. We’ve seen Wizards set this up with Jace’s actions in Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and the Omenpath arc in general.
We’re also quite likely to see the return of Magic’s iconic villain Nicol Bolas here. This has been hinted at very recently, and it would make a fitting capstone to the current arc. This is all speculation for now, of course. We’ll likely learn more soon, but for now, it’s the most mysterious set of 2026, unrevealed Universes Beyond set aside.
Star Trek
Closing out next year, we have another long-suspected Universes Beyond set. Star Trek was hinted at by a leak last year, as well as a premature product listing back in July. Even after all of that, the set still seemed like a long shot, but now it’s been officially confirmed.
With Edge of Eternities launching this year, the mechanical stage is very much set for Star Trek. Based on the early artwork, we’ll be seeing some more Spacecraft here, so the Station mechanic has a chance to redeem itself. The Warp mechanic is very likely to return as well, especially with ‘Warp Speed’ being one of the early artworks revealed today.
On top of that, we also saw a couple of iconic characters in Captain Kirk and Chancellor Gowron. This is clearly one for the fans, and early signs are good that it’ll deliver. Star Trek is a massive franchise, of course, so Wizards should have plenty to work with. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it rivalled Marvel Super Heroes in terms of content. This set will be coming in November 2026, so it’ll more than likely be the year’s grand finale.
