New Spider Man Mechanic Enables Spicy Infinite MTG Combo

Share
A deadly web of mechanical interactions!

With Spider Man now available to play on digital platforms, it’s time for a well-established Magic: The Gathering tradition: hunting down new combos. We’ve already seen a number of potent combo lines in these first couple of days, and things don’t appear to be slowing down. Today, MTG players discovered a new infinite combo with the Web-Slinging mechanic from Spider Man.

This combo comes to us from MTG Creative Combos on X, and it’s a bit of a doozy. While it does require four full cards to pull off, the results are absolutely devastating. The cards in question are fairly useful by themselves, too, so it’s not as much of a stretch as some combos we see. Throw in the fact that there are multiple shells in current Standard that can easily support this combo, and it may well be something we see around in the weeks to come.

The Infinite Web-Slinging Combo In MTG Standard

Web-Slinging Combo MTG

The infinite Web-Slinging combo is a little bit complicated, but nothing a seasoned MTG player can’t handle. To start with, you’ll need both Oltec Matterweaver or the new Silk, Web Weaver and Supportive Parents in play. The latter is a spicy new Spider Man card, but the former is a bit of a forgotten mythic from The Big Score. It’s great to see it find new use in this combo.

Once you’ve got these two in play, you’ll want to cast either Arachne, Psionic Weaver or Spider-Man, Web-Slinger. These are the two creatures from Spider Man that come with a Web-Slinging cost of just one mana, which is crucial for the combo to function. You’ll also need a second one of these cards in your hand. The combination doesn’t matter; you can even pull this combo off with two of the same Web-Slinger if you want.

Next, you’ll want to tap both Supportive Parents and your Web-Slinger in play to generate a white mana with Parents’ ability. You can then spend it to cast the other Web-Slinger from your hand, returning the first as you do so. This will allow you to generate a 1/1 Gnome with Matterweaver. You can then tap the Gnome and your new Web-Slinger for another white mana, and repeat the process as many times as you’d like.

The result of this combo will be an infinitely large board of tapped 1/1 Gnome tokens. Assuming your opponent doesn’t have a board clear, this will allow you to win in a landslide on your next turn. You’ll also get infinite cast and enters triggers, which can provide victory through cards like Impact Tremors.

No Plain Sailing

Web-Slinging Combo MTG Selesnya Gearhulk

So that’s the infinite Web-Slinging combo; the question now is where in MTG it can fit. While it’s fun and flashy, there is a lot working against this combo. You need four total cards for a start, three of which ultimately need to be in play. It also doesn’t win the game right away, which leaves your opponent room to finish you off or clear your board. Heck, Fire Magic can undo the whole combo in Standard right now for just a single red mana.

That said, there are still some potential homes here. There are a couple of established Selesnya decks in Standard, both of which could consider it going forward. Selesnya Gearhulk is probably the best of these, due to running Nurturing Pixie already. Pixie can sub in for one of the Web-Slingers as a combo piece, so it adds some nice redundancy.

Selesnya Cage could also make use of the combo, and even win the turn it pops off thanks to Skyknight Squire. Running all of the necessary pieces in this deck would likely prove too clunky, however, since Cage is a fairly aggressive strategy overall.

Ultimately, this combo is most likely to see play in Commander. While you have less chance of drawing each piece, you also have access to creature tutors and powerful card draw engines to get you there. Spider Man theme decks, in particular, will enjoy how many of the new set’s cards this combo employs. It’s not a new Commander classic by any means, but the individual cards are solid enough that a number of Selesnya decks should be able to find room for them.
