We’re well past the point where a new Magic: The Gathering collaboration should be surprising at all. Between Secret Lair and Universes Beyond, the game has crossed over with dozens of different IPs over the last few years. That said, not all collaborations are equal. This week, a brand-new MTG Funko Pop was revealed, based on Transformers of all things.
While Magic has worked with Transformers in the past during The Brothers’ War, this is still a bizarre new product. It’s a Funko Pop based on a Magic card, which is in itself based on another property. We’re getting into an Inception-style layers situation here. Details on this new Pop, including whether or not it’ll be bundled with its namesake card, are thin on the ground right now. In any case, it marks another, minor step in Magic’s ongoing crossover fever.
An MTG x Transformers Funko Pop?!
This new MTG x Transformers Funko Pop was revealed via Funko Pop News, an X account dedicated to the vinyl toy brand. The images shared show the front and back of the packaging, both of which feature the Magic: The Gathering logo. The back also features an image of the card the Pop is based on, Optimus Prime, Hero.
While many on social media assumed that this Pop would come with a copy of the card, this actually seems pretty unlikely. While we did see something similar with the Marvel Legends action figure promos recently, this situation is a bit different. Funko Pops are typically displayed in-box, and aren’t really intended to be opened. Additionally, there’s no mention of the card being included on the box, nor is it visible in the image of the front side.
Honestly, even if it’s not included, this isn’t a huge loss. While Optimus Prime is a cool card and a solid Commander, it’s not exactly in high demand. Copies of the base version can be had for just $3 right now. The inclusion of the card here, fun as it would be, won’t really move the needle much in terms of value.
There are two other Magic Funko Pops, Urza and Yawgmoth, lined up at present, with both slated for a November release. These two are numbered 1111 and 1112, respectively, while Optimus Prime is 1110. This implies that Optimus will come out in November or earlier, but we can’t know for sure. In any case, this should be a fun curio for both Magic and Transformers fans once it drops.
