MTG Best Spiders in Commander

Share

With the MTG Spider-Man set drawing near, there’s going to be a ton of players looking towards building Spider decks. Early cards suggest that Spiders matter will be a theme in the upcoming set, which means there will likely be a massive rush to grab cards to create a new Spider Typal deck.

To help, we’ve compiled a list of the best Spiders in Commander. To spoil some of the surprise, several of the best Spiders in MTG are new spoilers we’ve seen from Spider-Man.

Honorable Mention: Canoptek Spyder

Canoptek Spider is in a really weird spot on this list. The card is technically one of, if not the best, Spiders in Commander, especially for cards that are currently legal in the format. That said, the card doesn’t really accomplish much in Spider Typal decks. Instead, this card wants to see play in artifact creature or Vehicle Commander decks.

Currently, this is the most expensive MTG Spider that’s currently legal in Commander, and by a wide margin. The only reason this card is an honorable mention is that it doesn’t really play well with other Spiders.

Shelob, the Ungoliant

Shelob is currently the best Commander for Spider Typal decks. The deck doesn’t have a ton of options, mind you, and Shelob might end up being a weaker choice after Spider-Man releases.

As far as effects go, Shelob does not disappoint. Your Spiders become very difficult to block profitably, and trying to remove them becomes extremely expensive. Repurposing opponents’ creatures into Food is incredibly powerful, too. Not only will this ruin any graveyard shenanigans your opponents have, but the Food Tokens keep whatever abilities those creatures have.

The only drawback with Shelob is its color identity. Spiders have largely been Golgari up to this point, so it really wasn’t a big deal. Judging from the early Spider-Man spoilers we’re seeing, however, the stronger Spiders we have seen are branching out of that color identity. Using Shelob as a Commander may now be too restricting. Thankfully, that won’t stop Sheoldred from being in the 99 of a five-colored Spider Commander deck, if one exists.

Spider-Ham, Peter Porker

He doesn’t look like a Spider, but Spider-Ham, Peter Porker is way more than just an incredibly undercosted lord for Spider decks. Considering how many archetypes this card buffs, there’s probably going to be a whole bunch of decks that want this card. For Spiders, Peter Porker really is just a 2/2 lord that makes a Food, but that’s massively above rate compared to a lot of lords that various Typal decks get to use. This is a great two-drop for any Spider MTG deck.

Spider-Punk

Spider-Punk is the strange card on our list that gets far better in a cEDH context. This is undoubtedly the best Spider in MTG Commander in a competitive context, thanks to making spells and abilities uncounterable. While this is a bit less interesting in casual Commander, granting all of your Spiders Riot and trumping damage prevention is still interesting enough to include Spider-Punk in your Spider decks.

Riot makes sure all of your Spiders can swing in immediately to get as much value as possible. It can also start counter synergies with other cards present on this list. You won’t have to worry about your spells getting countered by anything, and any Fog effects won’t stop your Spiders from crashing in for damage. Spider-Punk will go in a lot of Commander decks, but there’s certainly a place for it in any Spider Typal decks that can fit it.

Spinner of Souls

Spinner of Souls MTG

Spinner of Souls makes sure that you’re never out of gas after a board wipe, which, in a creature-focused deck, is very important. Sometimes, you’ll get blown out by exile-based board wipes, but more often than not, Spinner of Souls will be able to recur the value you lose to destruction-based removal.

In an extremely focused strategy, it’s possible to create massive combo chains with Spinner of Souls. More often than not, however, this card will simply make sure that you’re never caught without something to do. In Commander, that’s incredibly important.

Of course, there is the chance that this card just gets removed on entry, but in our experience, Spinner of Souls is not threatening enough at a majority of tables to get this reaction, making it a sneaky pick.

Miles Morales/Ultimate Spider-Man

Miles Morales/Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the new spoilers we saw at the 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s one of the best Spiders in the entire format. The front side of this card makes the card viable in constructed, but for Commander, Ultimate Spider-Man offers exponential value for any decks that use counters. Sure, it only cares about Spiders and Legendary creatures, but that expands to any other Commanders you may be using.

As a reminder, these work like MDFC cards, allowing you to cast either side of the card for its mana value. While Ultimate Spider-Man is going to be much more interesting for Commander, Miles Morales does give players the option of casting a smaller body to stop attacking creatures if necessary. Some buffs in the meantime can help scale Ultimate Spider-Man’s ability if you choose to Transform Miles.

Combine that with Ultimate Spider-Man’s Camouflage ability, and you’ve got a threat that scales your Spiders and is very difficult to get rid of.

This List is Subject to Massive Change

As you may have noticed, many of the best Spiders in Commander haven’t even been released yet. The bar is rather low for this archetype currently, which means that a lot of the upcoming support from MTG Spider-Man is likely going to impact this list significantly. So, once we see more, don’t be surprised if this list changes.

This bizarrely means that a Spider Typal deck may look entirely different in a few months’ time. While this is exciting, it makes any sort of analysis for strong Spider Typal cards, past the first few, difficult to analyze. The entire landscape might change soon.
