Commander news from the Edge of Eternities First Look was incredibly impactful. Legendary Vehicles, alongside the new Legendary Spacecraft card type, are now legal Commanders. This doesn’t necessarily open the floor to a lot of relevant MTG cards printed in past sets, but it does create a lot of design space for new Commanders, and Edge of Eternities delivered.
We’ve already seen the secondary Commanders for the two Edge of Eternities preconstructed Commander decks. Now, the two Face Commanders have been revealed to be Spacecraft, showcasing the new Station mechanic at its most powerful.
Hearthhull, the Worldseed
Hearthhull, the Worldseed has been revealed as the Face Commander of the Jund-colored World Shaper Commander deck, which focuses on sacrificing lands. This Spacecraft certainly supports this theme, doubling as both an engine and a massive win condition.
You do need to Station two power into Hearthhull to use it at all, but this isn’t a very difficult thing to accomplish. Once done, Hearthhull enables extra land drops and draws cards all within the deck’s theme. Later in the game, you can fully Station Hearthhull to try and close the game out in short order. Combining this fully Stationed card with something like Scapeshift, for example, will wreak havoc.
The big difference that makes Hearthhull, the Worldseed much more viable than other Station cards we’ve seen is that the Station cost isn’t outlandish. Turning on Hearthull is very doable for just two power, and having the option to turn this Commander into more than just an engine gives it a strong versatility.
Thanks to an existing land sacrifice theme in Jund via Lord Windgrace, this precon will have no shortage of potential upgrades. That said, do be careful committing to anything too quickly, as we do not know what will be available in the actual precon yet.
Inspirit, Flagship Vessel
Inspirit, Flagship Vessel is the Face Commander of the Jeskai Counter Intelligence Edge of Eternities preconstructed deck. This deck has an artifacts and counters matter theme associated with it.
If you want to make a Station Commander deck, Inspirit might be the best Commander in your arsenal of choices. Once you’ve Stationed one power into it, Inspirit will start doling out +1/+1 counters, or Charge counters, onto another artifact you control. This can be used to speed up Station requirements, but there is technically a better use for these Charge Counters.
As is seen in competitive Dice Factory decks, a lot of powerful mana rocks that scale with mana value use Charge Counters to mark how much mana they can produce. Everflowing Chalice and Astral Cornucopia are two examples of this. Inspirit, Flagship Vessel can place Charge Counters onto these artifacts, accelerating your mana production through the roof. You can also place Charge Counters on nastier scaling artifacts, like Chalice of the Void, to continually keep opposing Commanders off the board.
Stationing Inspirit to its fullest isn’t quite as strong as unlocking Hearthhull’s final abilities, but granting all of your other artifacts Hexproof and Indestructible is a great way to insulate a massive board from common board wipes.
According to Weekly MTG, the Counter Intelligence deck heavily focuses on Charge Counters, which probably means that Inspirit will be a better Commander for the deck than Kilo, Apogee Mind despite that card’s potential to go infinite rather easily.
An Example of Commander’s Future
Now that Legendary Vehicles and Legendary Spacecraft are on the table for legal Commanders, there is a lot of new design space to explore for Wizards of the Coast. These two new Spacecraft are just the start. The concepts being explored here are rather interesting, and we are looking forward to seeing more of it.
This also showcases that Station can be rather viable. The Station costs for these Commanders seem very appropriate for them to see play. Sadly, a majority of the other Stations we’ve seen do not look very usable, but hopefully that changes as spoiler season continues.
For those interested in seeing the full list for these Commander precons, they won’t have to wait long. World Shaper will be spoiled tomorrow on July 9th, 2025, while Counter Intelligence will be fully revealed on July 10th. We’ll be sure to have those here when they do get revealed.
