Leaked Edge of Eternities Mythic Introduces New Land Type

Share

Over the last week, a handful of Edge of Eternities cards have been either leaked or officially spoiled. This outer space-themed set features some unique mechanics, perhaps none more intriguing than Station.

We got out first glimpse at the mechanic when The Seriema was previewed. While it looks like Station might be specific to Spacecraft at first glance, head designer Mark Rosewater confirmed that Station wasn’t directly tied to Spacecraft in the rules.

Well, today, a land with a new subtype was leaked that also happens to feature the Station mechanic. Notably, this card is just a leak and could therefore turn out to be fake. Regardless, for the sake of this article, we’re going to cover it under the assumption that it’s real. If you’d like to wait for an official reveal, consider this your spoiler warning.

With that out of the way, let’s see what this land has to offer.

Susur Secundi, Void Altar

This new land, known as Susur Secundi, Void Altar, introduces the subtype “Planet” to MTG. While we don’t know much about what this entails, presumably there will be other cards in the set that reward you for playing with Planets, similar to how cards like Travel the Overworld get better the more Towns you play with in Final Fantasy.

As an individual card, though, Susur Secundi takes a lot to get your money’s worth. It enters tapped, produces only one color, and doesn’t feature any basic land types. What you get in return is an activated ability that lets you sacrifice creatures to draw cards equal to their power. The issue is that you first need to tap creatures with a total of at least 12 power before you can utilize the ability.

In a Standard setting, this is almost certainly not worth the setup cost. Being forced to Station at sorcery speed means you can’t even use your big threats to block if you want to advance your progress towards maximizing Susur Secundi. The fact that this is one of the mythic lands in the set is notable. Hopefully this isn’t indicative of a trend of mediocre mythics.

Commander Use

The good news, at least, is that in an EDH setting, you should have more time to tap your creatures and get your card advantage engine rolling. Susur Secundi heavily incentivizes you to play creatures with high power, both so that you can get its activated ability online and so you can draw more cards when you sacrifice those creatures.

As such, Commanders like Yargle, Glutton of Urborg and Yargle and Multani come to mind. Being able to cast Yargle and Multani, immediately power up your land, and then sacrifice Yargle and Multani to draw 18 cards should put you in great shape.

This land also pairs well with King Macar, the Gold-Cursed, since it gives you a low-cost way of tapping King Macar without needing to risk losing it in combat. Even some simple sacrifice synergies with Grave Pact in the mix could make Susur Secundi a reasonable inclusion in a casual EDH setting.

This land is certainly cool and puts a completely different spin on the Station mechanic. Just don’t expect it to break out in the competitive scene.
