MTG Edge of Eternities Teaser Confirms Sliver Support is Coming

Share

Edge of Eternities is shaping up to be a surprisingly incredible MTG set. At first, the space setting concerned a lot of players, as it seemed like another step toward absurdity. As more and more details about the set have been revealed, however, players have been changing their tune.

Between initial spoilers, leaks, and Mark Rosewater’s newly released teaser, there’s a ton to be excited about. For starters, we now know that Slivers, or Sliver support at least, is coming back to MTG. While Rosewater’s teaser didn’t include any official spoilers, as usual, there’s still a ton of information to digest.

A bunch of card text, names, and creature types have just been revealed, pushing hype for Edge of Eternities to the stratosphere.

Sliver Support Confirmed

There was already a strong amount of evidence that Slivers would be a part of Edge of Eternities, but Mark Rosewater’s teaser has confirmed it. Among the points spoiled from Rosewater’s teaser, a “card that grants an ability to Slivers” was mentioned.

For reference, Slivers are known for their snowbally nature thanks to the pattern of them granting abilities to one another. Each Sliver tends to buff all Slivers in some way, quickly creating a terrifying board where every Sliver ends up buffing one another.

Technically, there’s no confirmation that Rosewater’s teaser hints at a Sliver in and of itself. This might not even be Sliver Support, but hate, depending on what ability it grants. That seems unlikely, but it’s always a possibility.

Either way, Edge of Eternities will have cards that care about Slivers in it, which almost in itself confirms that Slivers will be appearing in the set.

Another Banned Card Replacement?

Abuelo’s Awakening was just banned in Standard thanks to its ability to resurrect Omniscience for just four mana. The card had some Standard-legal replacements, but these were all rotating out as Edge of Eternities became legal. Bizarrely, according to Mark Rosewater’s teasers, we have yet another white card coming that can play the same role as Abuelo’s Awakening.

This card, in particular, “can return noncreature, nonland cards from the graveyard to the battlefield.” Omniscience could certainly count, but we have no way of knowing if there’s a mana value restriction associated with this effect. This card also reads like it can return multiple cards this way, which suggests a very high mana value.

So, while I wouldn’t sound the alarms, it is something to be conscious of.

Massive Artifact Support

Multiple teases that Rosewater shares focus on artifacts. We already got a hint that artifacts matter would be a theme in Edge of Eternities thanks to Alpharael, Dreaming Acolyte, but this confirms it.

The most notable thing shared regarding artifacts is that there will be an effect that gives all your spells Affinity for Artifacts. If this is reasonably priced, it could have a massive impact on older constructed formats. Suddenly, colorless payoffs in Modern and beyond can all have Affinity, allowing the archetype to play faster than ever.

Another effect in Edge of Eternities will make Artifacts you control into Foods in addition to their other types. This could be a big deal for Cauldron Familiar decks using sacrifice synergies like Mayhem Devil to close out games, and could otherwise superpower some Commander strategies. Fans of the Food and Fellowship Lord of the Rings Precon should be on the lookout.

Poison Returns?

Rosewater has confirmed that Poison will be returning in Edge of Eternities, but his specific mention of a ‘poison card’ suggests that this will be a cameo mechanic, and not a larger theme within the set.

This essentially confirms that the recent leaks we’ve seen for Edge of Eternities are real. During these leaks we saw Virulent Silencer, a card that grants two Poison Counters to a player whenever a nontoken artifact creature deals damage to them.

For now, it’s unclear if this is the only card with Poison in the set, so we’ll have to watch closely during spoiler season.

Tons of Card Draw

Multiple points within Mark Rosewater’s teasers suggest that powerful draw engines will be coming in Edge of Eternities. One card offers a “repeatable activated ability that lets you draw two cards and create a 2/2 creature token,” while another has the text “Whenever you play a land or cast a spell, draw a card.” Both of these effects are insanely powerful, offering easily accessible card draw or a powerful mana sink.

Of course, these cards are very unlikely to be easily accessible. The first ability could cost a ton of mana to activate, while the other could be locked behind a Station effect that requires a ton of counters. The second ability, in particular, can easily get out of hand since you’ll basically draw a card for playing something from your hand, so the restriction behind it must be high.

A Legendary Lobster Citizen???

As a final note, Edge of Eternities will have a lot of wacky creature types coming to Magic. Everything from a Legendary Lobster Citizen, to Lhurgoyfs, to Kavus, and even Robot Pangolins will be here. Notably, Eldrazis have also been officially confirmed by Mark Rosewater’s teasers.

It’s especially notable just how many different villainous things are coming in Edge of Eternities. Slivers, Eldrazi, and Poison were all mentioned here, which certainly suggests that we’ll be in for a wild ride.

While we mentioned a lot of the things that we felt were the most exciting about Mark Rosewater’s Edge of Eternities teasers, there’s still more to see. If you’re interested in perusing these for yourself, feel free to take a look here.
