Over the past couple of weeks, a handful of strong Final Fantasy Commander cards have seen significant spikes in price. Saga creatures like Summon: Yojimbo and Summon: Ixion have proven to pull their weight beyond their associated Precons.
Now, a red legend from the Revival Trance deck is the latest versatile Final Fantasy Commander card to increase significantly in value. This creature is no ordinary Clone variant, and it doesn’t take much to get your money’s worth.
Gogo, Mysterious Mime
Unlike more traditional Clones, Gogo doesn’t enter as a copy of another creature. Instead, at the beginning of combat during each of your turns, this wizard can become a copy of another creature of your choice. You are then forced to attack with both Gogo and the creature you copy, but you get a nice power boost for your troubles.
The most important thing about this card, however, is that it retains its name even when you copy another creature. This is essential, as it allows you to copy your Commander and not have the “Legend Rule” give you the fits.
Unsurprisingly, Gogo shines in the Revival Trance deck with Terra, Herald of Hope at the helm. Assuming you can connect in combat reliably, you’ll get to resurrect multiple small creatures from your graveyard to play.
That being said, there are plenty of other Commanders with prominent triggered abilities that are well worth doubling up on. Gogo is a staple of Magda, Brazen Outlaw EDH shells, for example. By copying Magda, not only do you have an extra Dwarf to attack with, but every attacking Dwarf generates two Treasures instead of one.
Meanwhile, in conjunction with Jodah, the Unifier, you can enable a huge attack with all of your legends receiving a doubly massive buff. Assuming you can make it to your second main phase unscathed, any follow-up legend you cast from hand will net you two pseudo-Cascade triggers.
It didn’t take long for players to realize that Gogo is just a good card that fits into a variety of red Commander decks. The card’s demand is very high, and we’re now starting to see its price point rise as a result.
The Spike
Since the release of Final Fantasy MTG, Gogo, Mysterious Mime has had a high, steady level of demand. Despite this, the card didn’t experience a major jump in price until a couple of days ago. Gogo’s market price has quickly ballooned up to $9.99. This represents a 657% spike between the card’s lowest point ($1.32) and where it sits at the time of writing this article.
Gogo’s extended art variant experienced a very similar trend. Despite being worth $3.35 on June 27th, the card has skyrocketed to $8.12. On top of that, the current lowest listing for non-foil, extended art copies is $14. Similarly, there is only one traditional copy listed for less than $15 on TCGplayer. As you might expect from these prices, there’s currently very little supply for Gogo, Mysterious Mime.
A Chance for a Drop
With a constant influx of demand, it’s hard to imagine the price of Gogo decreasing by a big margin anytime soon. That said, when a reprint wave of the Final Fantasy Precons hit the market, there’s an opportunity for a price drop as supply increases.
This isn’t an abnormal pattern. Potent LOTR singles like Forth Eorlingas! have dipped in price with every wave. Forth Eorlingas! saw its market price drop every month during this calendar year.
It’s also possible that demand dies down over time. The card is certainly strong, but forcing your creatures to attack does put a restriction on what Commander decks will want this type of effect. As players inevitably focus their attention on future releases, Gogo’s price may start to fall.
In the short term, though, Gogo has the potential to continue its upward spiral. It wouldn’t be surprising if other Final Fantasy Commander cards follow suit.
