While many MTG players rightfully choose Local Game Stores for their card purchases, big box stores also carry MTG cards. This makes cracking a pack while picking up other items in stores like Walmart rather tempting. Sadly, MTG card prices at these stores usually have a significant markup, but you can occasionally find deals for products that have a massive markup on the secondary market, as big box stores don’t usually follow these.
In addition to this, big box stores occasionally have unique products with some exclusive promo cards. While the promo isn’t particularly interesting, a new Final Fantasy Play Pack has been discovered and, depending on how much Final Fantasy Play Booster packs are going for in your area, it might not actually be a bad deal.
Final Fantasy Play Pack
Posted by Reddit user Murdoc_The_Best, Walmart is reportedly offering a new Final Fantasy Play Pack. Offering three Final Fantasy Play Boosters and a promo copy of Zidane, Tantalus Thief, this sort of product packaging is something we’ve seen countless times from big box Stores.
For those interested in acquiring every variant of every Final Fantasy MTG card, this is the first time we’ve seen Zidane, Tantalus Thief as a promo. That said, aside from having the little star-themed checkmark as the set symbol, this is the exact same card as the traditional foil uncommon you can find in the main set.
That’s as far as exclusive cards go for this box. To our knowledge, there are no other potential promos you can find inside, but a similar promotion was found on Final Fantasy Bundles that many players found misleading. This is rather unlikely to have the same issue, however, since the promo is not that interesting.
Is the Final Fantasy Play Pack Worth it?
This entirely depends on what price you find the Final Fantasy Play Pack at, and what Final Fantasy Play Booster packs are worth in your area. Using TCGplayer as a benchmark, Final Fantasy Play Boosters are selling for approximately $9.50 each. The Zidane promo, sadly, won’t add any real value to the purchase. Most copies of Zidane, Tantalus Thief go for less than a dollar. This promo, at most, might have a small premium.
At these pack prices, as long as you can find a Final Fantasy Play Pack for under $27.50, it’s actually not a bad deal. According to the original Reddit post where this surfaced, this Play Pack was listed at $23.87. It’s not a super meaningful discount, but if your LGSs are matching TCGplayer prices, then this Play Pack is a little bit cheaper than just buying individual Final Fantasy Play Boosters. This is rather odd, considering that big box stores usually have a significant premium on their products.
To do the math, if you can’t find individual Final Fantasy Play Booster packs for under $8 in your area, this is actually the cheapest price you’re going to get. The Zidane is unlikely to add relevant value to it, but if, for some reason, the promo ends up being rather scarce, it could go for a small premium as collectors try to find it.
So, if you’re looking to crack some Final Fantasy packs, and prices for individual packs are expensive everywhere, the Final Fantasy Play Pack might actually be worth it. That said, if prices are comparable between this and your LGS, we recommend supporting small businesses when possible.
