Barrage Including New $1000+ MTG Promos Draw Mixed Reactions

Today’s new announcements from Wizards of the Coast should excite competitive players. In addition to revealing details about the next Regional Championship and Regional Championship Qualifier seasons, a new Magic Spotlight and 2025’s Eternal Weekend have finally received event dates. Of course, new promos have been announced for all of these events.

Whether you’re a fan of Standard, Modern, Legacy, or even Vintage, there’s something for you in this lavish batch of promos. Some of these cards have the potential to be extremely expensive, while others are confusing misses that make little to no sense.

Eternal Weekend Promos

As far as expensive promos go, the 2025 Eternal Weekend promos are not only the most expensive ones in this article, but likely some of the most expensive ones of the entire year. The massive scarcity of these cards, in particular, is what makes them so valuable.

This year, Tendrils of Agony and Trinisphere are up for grabs. Due to legality reasons, Tendrils of Agony doesn’t see much play outside of Legacy Storm decks. As such, it makes sense that this promo is being offered as the Legacy Championship prize.

Trinisphere, on the other hand, sees play in Commander, Modern, Legacy, and Vintage. The card severely slows down games in faster formats and can make some decks stop functioning outright. This is definitely the more desirable of the two Eternal Weekend 2025 promos and is offered to top finishers in the Vintage Championships.

The top 32 finishers at each Eternal Weekend Championship will earn their corresponding nonfoil promo, while the top 8 finishers will earn both the nonfoil and the foil versions of their promos. This means that only 96 copies of the nonfoil promos and 24 foil copies of each promo will ever exist.

These extremely scarce numbers have routinely caused Eternal Weekend promos to go for thousands of dollars. Even the top 32 nonfoil Crop Rotation from last year’s Eternal Weekend is currently listed for $1700 on eBay. Foils, on the other hand, can go for even more. Because of how scarce these cards are, it’s difficult to find listings of them anywhere.

If you’re interested in attending this year’s Eternal Weekend events, you can find the dates below:

  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—hosted by Card Titan
    • October 9–12, 2025
  • Lucca, Italy—hosted by 4Seasons
    • November 27–30, 2025
  • Yokohoma, Japan—hosted by Hareruya
    • December 13–14, 2025

Disappointing Regional Championship Qualifier Promos

While the Eternal Weekend promos are fantastic as usual, the same cannot be said about the upcoming Regional Championship promos. It didn’t take long for players to criticize Wizards’ lackluster choices.

The criticism comes from the selection of Laughing Jasper Flint as a promotional item for RCQ top finishers. Despite having a decent ability, this Lizard sees little to no play in any competitive formats, making the appeal for a premium version of it nonexistent.

Many players need incentives to attend RCQ events, and there’s absolutely nothing alluring about this top-finisher promo. While the recent Fauna Shaman wasn’t a great Regional Championship Qualifier promo, either, it is far better than this. As far as secondary market value goes, Laughing Jasper Flint is worth a bit over a dollar.

Shoot the Sheriff is the participation promo for the next round of RCQs, and it’s a much better choice than Laughing Jasper Flint. The card doesn’t see play as a four-of anywhere, but does routinely appear in Duel Commander, Modern, and Legacy as a two-mana conditional removal spell. Despite its lower popularity in Standard and Pioneer, Shoot the Sheriff also remains legal in those formats. This isn’t an interesting reprint from a financial perspective, but as far as playability goes, it’s miles ahead of Laughing Jasper Flint.

The Regional Championship season for these promos will begin on August 2nd, 2025, and end on November 9th, 2025. These qualifiers will feed into Regional Championships that occur between January 24th, 2026, and March 22nd, 2026.

Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation Promo

The next Magic Spotlight event has also been announced. Planetary Rotation will take place in Orlando, offering Pro Tour invites to the best Standard players in the event. Named after Standard’s upcoming rotation that will occur at the end of July, Planetary Rotation asks players to showcase their Standard innovation for the ultimate prize.

Get Lost is a suitable promotional choice for this event, offering players a premium removal option in Standard that’s also seen in Duel Commander and Pioneer. All participants will receive a nonfoil copy, while the top 128 finishers will be awarded a traditional foil variant.

Considering Get Lost has a secondary market value of about $4, there’s a decent chance that this promo will be worth a decent premium. This isn’t nearly as exciting as the recent $100 Terror of the Peaks promotional card from the SCG Con Atlanta spotlight, but it completely blows the even more recent Garruk Wildspeaker promo out of the water. As far as promos go, this one passes the bar, but is by no means a reason to go out of your way to attend the event.

If you’re after some Pro Tour invites, however, Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation might be for you. This event takes place on August 29th-31st, 2025.

Eternal Weekend promos aside, a majority of these new competitive promos are rather disappointing. We’ve had stronger Regional Championship and Magic Spotlight promos rather recently, and it’s a shame to see those followed up by cards that fewer players will be interested in acquiring.
