It was easy to forget, what with all the Final Fantasy excitement brewing, but Magic: The Gathering’s latest Secret Lair Superdrop went on sale a few days ago. From Monday, May 12th, players have been able to get their hands on the Ultimate Pencil Superdrop. At the time of writing, not many have, however, and all drops are still in stock: a rarity these days. That said, some players have taken the plunge, revealing that the Bonus Card for the ‘Everyone’s Invited’ Commander deck is none other than Changeling Outcast.
This was a card many expected to see in the main decklist itself, so it’s a welcome pick in that sense. On the other hand, it’s hardly an exciting card from a financial perspective. It won’t do much to convince fans to pick up this latest wave of drops, all of which are underperforming so far. Whether that’s due to priorities being elsewhere or the newly-inflated prices, it’s clear that Secret Lair no longer has the immediate pull it once did.

This creature can’t block and can’t be blocked.
The Changeling Outcast Bonus Card was revealed in a post on r/secretlair_collectors by DarkAntagony, who reportedly received it in the mail yesterday. The card comes with the Everyone’s Invited Secret Lair Commander deck, now infamous for its high price tag of $200.
As a Bonus Card, Changeling Outcast makes perfect sense for the drop it’s in. In fact, many in the comments on DarkAntagony’s post noted their surprise that it wasn’t included in the main list. As a one-mana creature with all creature types, it synergizes very well with Everyone’s Invited and its cross-typal theme. The main list already included Mothdust Changeling and Universal Automaton, so it’s nice to see the triumvirate completed in the Bonus slot.
Useful as it is gameplay-wise, Changeling Outcast is a bit of a dud financially. The card has had several reprints over the years. As a result, copies can be had for around $0.70 on the low end. This means it’s basically negligible as a value add for this drop. It’s worth noting that the Modern Horizons 2 Retro Frame Timeshifted version of the card goes for significantly more, at around $6. With this version being foil and fairly scarce, it could reach a similar price point long-term.
In either case, the card isn’t nearly exciting enough to counterbalance the disappointment in Everyone’s Invited. Players were vocal about the big price increase on the deck compared to past Secret Lair offerings. The full decklist, interesting as it is, did little to address those concerns. The Bonus Card was a final chance for the deck to redeem itself, but sadly, it’s yet another miss.
