Deadpool, Trading Card made an explosive entry into the MTG world on April Fool’s Day. As much as the card reads like an effect from a Silver-bordered set, it is indeed the real deal. A text-swapping ability that ignores Hexproof is very powerful, indeed. There should be little surprise that players are already beginning to build Deadpool as a Commander.
The Master, Multiplied may not seem to align with Deadpool right away, but make no mistake, these two are a deadly duo. the Master, Multiplied immediately started skyrocketing in price after the reveal of Deadpool, Trading Card.
The Master, Multiplied
The Master, Multiplied is rather expensive, but combined with Deadpool, it can absolutely overrun the game. The biggest upside to The Master, Multiplied is its ability to ignore the Legend Rule. Thanks to Myriad and its final effect, The Master, Multiplied will essentially make tons of copies of itself if it’s not removed in time. Myriad will be unaffected by the Legend Rule, and your tokens won’t disappear.
Combined with Deadpool, Trading Card, you can not only steal a ton of different text boxes, but you can also create a ton of creatures that are hurting your opponent. In addition to enabling other effects that copy Deadpool, if you can manage to give Deadpool Haste, he can swap text boxes with your Master and immediately start making tons of copies of Deadpool.
Otherwise, the MTG X Marvel’s Deadpool Secret Lair already comes with Saw in Half. This can already be used to make multiple token copies of Deadpool, but the Legend Rule will stop one from sticking around. Deadpool will still swap text with two creatures despite the Legend Rule applying. With The Master, you get to keep both Deadpools.
The Master, Multiplied is likely one of the most explosive ways to maximize Deadpool within his colors. From that perspective, this card’s price spike makes a lot of sense.
The Spike
From a financial perspective, this price spike is absolutely nuts. A 2831% price spike over the course of a few days is unheard of. According to TCGplayer, only 8 copies of The Master, Multiplied were sold on March 30. This spiked to 99 copies on March 31, and over 460 copies were sold on April 1st. At the beginning of this three-day sequence, The Master, Multiplied wasn’t even worth a dollar. This timeline heavily suggests that Deadpool is the cause of this spike.
Now, The Master, Multiplied only has 14 listings for its basic copy on TCGplayer, and they are generally selling for about $20. You can still pick up some copies of this card for a little under $16, but that is the absolute cheapest that this card seems to be available for.
Foils for The Master are much rarer than non-foils because they were only available in Collector Boosters. At the time of writing, traditional foils are selling for $30 and up. Only four copies of the traditional foils are currently available on TCGplayer.
There are a ton of variants of The Master, Multiplied. Between Showcase, Extended Art, and Surge Foils, players have a lot of choice over what exact copy of this card they want. At the time of writing, no single variant, besides the base one, has more than 10 copies on TCGplayer. The cheapest variant of The Master also appears to be its base variant, but the nonfoil Showcase variant is comparable.
On the other hand, Surge Foil copies of The Master, Multiplied’s Extended Art variant, are the most expensive, at around $40.
The Start of a Trend?
The Master’s sudden price spike suggests that other cards that synergize well with Deadpool, Trading Card could see massive price spikes in the coming days. The Rakdos color identity severely restricts what can go in a Deadpool Commander deck, so obvious synergy pieces will likely get snapped up quickly.
The good news is that, for patient players, The Master, Multiplied may drop in price eventually. This is a common pattern for price spikes caused by players rushing to build a new Commander deck. Once some new cards come out and players’ attention shift to the newest release, demand for recent cards go down.
That said, normalizing the card’s price might take some time. At the end of the day, if you want to buy this card for Deadpool, you might be best off biting the bullet sooner rather than later. This card’s price spike does not appear to be over yet. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a good deal, I would prepare to wait for a few months.
