Final MTG Manga Promo Is Beautiful Take On Classic Board Wipe

The end of a very profitable era...

It’s a big week for fans of both Magic: The Gathering and Japanese culture. On Monday we saw a full-on anime intro promoting a new Japan-exclusive in-store event. We also got an April Fools joke teasing an actual MTG anime series, which may well come to pass given the response from players. Today, the last MTG manga promo in the series was revealed to be none other than Wrath of God.

This new promo will be included with volume 18 of Destroy All Humans: They Can’t Be Regenerated, which will be hitting Japanese shelves on June 26th. This marks the final entry in a series which has been running since 2019, though we’ve only seen English releases for the first few volumes at present. Players outside of Japan won’t be getting their hands on this promo for a while, but its exclusive new artwork should make it highly sought-after once they do.

The Wrath Of God MTG Manga Promo

Wrath of God MTG Manga Promo
  • Mana Value: 2WW
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Type: Sorcery
  • Card Text: Destroy all creatures. They can’t be regenerated.

Wrath of God is the perfect choice for the final MTG manga promo in the series. First of all, the text of the card mirrors the name of the manga, Destroy All Humans: They Can’t Be Regenerated, almost exactly. Second, the card ties into a major running theme of the series. In the first volume the two protagonists, Hajime Kano and Emi Sawatari, pledge to be with each other when the world ends. The apocalyptic nature of Wrath of God’s effect is a great flavor fit for this reason.

On top of that, the artwork used for this promo does something none of the others in the series do. It uses brand-new artwork by Yumeko, representing a key scene from the manga itself. Past Destroy All Humans promos, Avalanche Riders aside, have used classic artwork in new frames, but many players noted that new art in the style of the manga would’ve been a more interesting choice. Those players get their vindication for this special final promo.

Financially, Wrath of God isn’t anything to write home about for the most part. The card has been part of the game since the very beginning, and it still sees regular play in Commander. It also has a ton of reprints, however, which keeps its value around $2-3 for the most part. That said, there are special variants that go for much more. There’s a textless version that sells for around $26, for example, and a couple of Secret Lair variants at around $8 each.

There’s real potential for this version to be worth a lot more than $2-3, in other words. The exclusive art will likely do a lot of heavy lifting in this regard, as will the card’s innate scarcity as a promo.

The Full 18

Wrath of God MTG Manga Promo Priciest Examples

With Wrath of God revealed as the final MTG manga promo, the full range of Destroy All Humans promos is finally known to us. There are 18 of these in total, one for each volume. We’ve listed them all below, along with their current market values for reference.

2Shock$8.68
3Duress$4.99
4Voltaic Key$12.11

15Snuff Out$16.84
16Gush$14.60
17Ancestral MaskN/A
18Wrath of GodN/A

While there are certainly some misses here, overall this is a fantastic set of promos. Eight of the 18 are worth more than $10, which is a solid rate, and the overall value of the set is around $178. It’s worth bearing in mind that we don’t have values for the last two promos yet, either. Once these come in, I imagine that number could be pushed closer to $200.

Assuming you grab each volume at the standard price of $14.99, this means you’re only spending about $120 on the manga itself. There’s a ton of long-term financial potential on these promos, too, thanks to collectors.

Years from now, a full set of these promos could be worth a lot more than $200. Of course, it could also be worth a lot less. The Magic: The Gathering secondary market is nothing if not unpredictable. In any case, it’s great to finally see this long-running series concluded, and with a perfect card nonetheless.

Buy-A-Box Tokens

But wait, there’s more! In addition to the MTG manga promos above, which we now know include Wrath of God, there are actually a few more rare collectibles associated with Destroy All Humans. For Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, Wizards created three Japan-exclusive tokens portraying the protagonists from the manga. Emi Sawatari was shown as a 4/4 Angel, Hajime Kano as a 2/2 Zombie, and Lou as a 1/1 Faerie.

These tokens were available only to players who pre-ordered Neon Dynasty through one of three Japanese online retailers. The retailers in question were WonderGOO, Amazon JP, and Hareruya. Interestingly, the style of token players received depended on the retailer chosen. WonderGOO customers got near-textless tokens in a manga style, Amazon JP’s tokens were more traditional borderless MTG cards, and Hareruya’s were just regular tokens with the exclusive art. All three tokens were available in all three variants.

Owing to their exclusivity, and the fact that Destroy All Humans is now reasonably popular overseas, these tokens are very expensive. The WonderGOO Angel is the priciest by far, sitting at nearly $100 right now. They’re all worth more than $15, however, which is huge for tokens. In general, the WonderGOO tokens are the most expensive, followed by Amazon JP’s, followed by Hareruya’s. Clearly the manga-inspired token layout resonated with players.

These tokens aren’t mainline promos like those above, but they are fascinating collectibles for those who enjoy Destroy All Humans as a series. While they’re not at all easy to find online, they provide a unique edge, and a ton of value, to any Destroy All Humans promo set. Keep an eye out for them if you’re a fan of the series.
