The new MTG Spongebob Secret Lairs appear to have more going on than expected. We’ve already seen a few new Secret Lair bonus cards for the drop, including Spongebob’s house as Command Tower and Dismember representing the legendary ‘MY LEG’ meme. As much as this Dismember calls out to many players, there’s a better card to hit as your potential bonus card.
With that in mind, here’s what is likely the best MTG Spongebob Secret Lair bonus card to find.
Smothering Tithe
As a Commander player, I find that I never have enough copies of this particular Game Changer. Smothering Tithe threatens to create tons of mana in a four-player game. If the card sticks around for too long, players will be drowned in the mana advantage it can grant. Considering the amount of card draw players need to run in Commander to keep up, Smothering Tithe commonly creates tons of advantage very quickly. It’s no exaggeration to say that this card changes the game if it doesn’t get dealt with immediately.
Thanks to being incredibly sought after, Smothering Tithe’s premium variants have historically had a huge premium attached to them. Currently worth about $35-40 according to TCGplayer market averages, even the cheapest Smothering Tithe’s are expensive. The anime art Smothering Tithe, however, commonly goes for over $100, even in its nonfoil variant. That said, it should be noted that the cheapest copies of Smothering Tithe on the market go for about $20, despite being much lower than market averages.
This particular Smothering Tithe is difficult to assess primarily because we don’t know which Spongebob Secret Lairs are the rare ones. Even at a value of $40, however, Mr. Krabs is going to bring a ton of value to your Secret Lair should you open it. The card will likely be worth even more than that.
That’s not the only new Secret Lair bonus card that’s been discovered.
cOuNTeRspELl
Wizards of the Coast knew exactly what the MTG community wanted with the new Counterspell, but instead of putting the best variant in a normal Secret Lair, they made it a bonus card instead. Feelings about this decision aside, if this is the rare Bonus Card, it is going to be incredibly expensive.
Adding the incosistent capitalization that this Spongebob meme is known for, this Counterspell will be heavily desired by any MTG X Spongebob fan. We haven’t seen too many of these in the wild so far, however, so it’s tough to know just how expensive it will be.
All Spongebob Secret Lair Bonus Cards so Far
As of the writing of this article, we know about the following Spongebob Secret Lair cards:
- Smothering Tithe – Collector number 7009
- cOuNTeRspELl – Collector number 7010
- Dismember – Collector number 7011
- Command Tower – Collector number 7012
There could be more that have not been discovered yet, but this is already more bonus cards then there are Secret Lairs. At this point, the community is largely assuming that the distribution for MTG Spongebob Secret Lair bonus cards is random. The only remaining question is if a particular Secret Lair card is rarer than the others.
From a value perspective, Smothering Tithe is the clear winner here, but honestly, most people would probably be happy with anyhting outside of the Command Tower. That seems like the worst Secret Lair bonus card to open, but for all we know, it could be the rarest one.
