The spoiler season for Tarkir: Dragonstorm is slowly coming to a close. While things don’t officially finish until March 27th, we’ve nonetheless seen most of the set by now. Importantly, as of yesterday, we’ve now seen every one of the five preconstructed Commander decks launching alongside Tarkir: Dragonstorm.
As usual, a set’s precons are usually the best place to find spicy reprints since Wizards doesn’t have to worry about Standard legality. Unsurprisingly, Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s precons are no different, as there are plenty of expensive cards getting reprinted. One card, in particular, however, is mysteriously missing.
Despite being a perfect addition to the Temur Roar Commander deck, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm hasn’t been reprinted. This has caused an immense rush of demand and a huge overnight price spike for the card.
Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm
To put it bluntly, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm is one of the best Dragons in Temur colors in all of MTG. Able to create copies of any Dragon when it enters, even the legendary ones, Miirym is a true value machine. If you’re building a Dragon Typal deck and Miirym fits within your color identity, she’s basically an auto include.
Despite being one of the best Dragons in MTG, Wizards of the Coast hasn’t reprinted them in Tarkir: Dragonstorm. The Special Guests were, somewhat bizarrely, Ultimatums and Fetch Lands, and Miirym hasn’t appeared in any precons. Given their colors, it would have made sense for them to be in Temur Roar, but this wasn’t meant to be.
During the reveal of this preconstruted Commander deck, Wizards of the Coast even addressed this seemingly glaring omission. Unsurprisingly, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm is a bit strong to be included within a precon that’s not built around her. Including her within Temur Roar would have had her outshining the deck’s face Commanders.
While Wizards may have shied away from Miirym for this reason, MTG players don’t have the same restriction. If they simply want to make their deck better, Miirym is an easy upgrade and an obvious purchase. Sadly, doing this is a lot easier said than done, as the price of Mirrym has spiked now that they’ve not been reprinted.
The Spike
Like many Dragons, the price of Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm has steadily been on the up and up as Tarkir: Dragonstorm approached. Since Miirym is so strong and Dragon Typal is in vogue, it’s no wonder that players are interested in her. Buying too early, however, could have been a risk that’d end up literally costing you.
For most MTG players, this wouldn’t have been a colossal problem, as Miirym only hit $7 until recently. Investors, however, could have been on the hook for a lot more due to buying multiple copies. If you didn’t get in before the price started to rise toward the end of February, then you kind of missed the train.
With this in mind, it may have seemed obvious to just buy early and as much as possible. In hindsight, this is correct, but there was a real chance that Miirym was going to get reprinted. If this happened, all that investment would be wasted since the price would crash even lower.
Regardless of what was the correct choice once upon a time, Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm is now a very expensive Dragon. Now that we know this card isn’t being reprinted, prices have shot up massively following a surge in sales. Currently, there are only 23 near-mint non-showcase copies of Miirym available for purchase. Prices for these copies now start at $15.68.
Winding the clocks back just one month, copies of Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm could easily be picked up for around $1.60. So far, that’s an 880% price spike, but it might not end there. There are still a few weeks until the official release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, after all.
The Future
Since there are so few copies of Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm left available for purchase, this price may continue to rise. Even when including copies of the showcase variant, which are currently selling for $10, there are only 41 copies available for purchase. Considering how popular Miirym is right now, these remaining copies might not last long.
That being said, this spike is undoubtedly a reactionary one that will settle down over time. Prices might be high at the moment, but that’s only because we just found out that Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm isn’t being reprinted. Over time, interest in Dragon Typal decks will fade, and the price of Miirym will fall along with it.
The only question is when, rather than if, this will happen. Should any investors sell off their haul too readily following this spike, the flood of supply could bring down prices. Alternatively, by holding and drip feeding their haul, prices could remain surprisingly high until Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s release.
Ultimately, as always, there’s no telling which direction things will go, so we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully, for the sake of affordably upgrading precons, this price will fall sooner rather than later. It’s just a shame we didn’t get a well-timed reprint of this Commander classic within the main set.
