Over the past few days, we have been getting absolutely bombarded with new Secret Lairs. From arcade-themed designs to neat land cycles from the good old days, the Winter Superdrop has a boatload of neat products in store. This assortment goes on sale February 10 at 9 am PT, so don’t miss out on your chance to add some beautiful cards to your collection!
Interestingly, while every individual Secret Lair in the Winter Superdrop has presumably been revealed at this point, that hasn’t stopped Wizards of the Coast from previewing some information about future products. According to a blurb at the top of the Secret Lair website, a powerful one-drop mana generator is going to be featured in a Drop this year.
This atypical mana dork was printed 30 years ago and is capable of providing a huge burst of mana in the right situation. It may not be the most valuable, but there’s one thing that makes the reprint very intriguing.
Orcish Lumberjack Returns

The card in question is none other than Orcish Lumberjack. Unlike other mana dorks that come down on turn one, Orcish Lumberjack is capable of netting you three mana by itself. Obviously, the cost of sacrificing a Forest in order to use Orcish Lumberjack’s ability is quite intensive. As such, a lot of Gruul decks will choose not to utilize this card.
Regardless, Orcish Lumberjack is a cEDH staple in decks that are looking to play a big haymaker ahead of schedule. Decks with Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer or Etali, Primal Conqueror at the helm make great use of Orcish Lumberjack.
Meanwhile, in Duel Commander, Korvold, Fae-Cursed King decks are built to maximize Orcish Lumberjack. Casting Korvold on turn two isn’t out of the question, and any future activations of Orcish Lumberjack will trigger Korvold to draw you more cards.
Unfortunately, from a value perspective, Orcish Lumberjack isn’t all that exciting. This card debuted back in Ice Age but has seen reprints in Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters and on The List. According to TCGPlayer market price, players can get their hands on traditional non-foil copies for under 60 cents.
A First Time for Everything
What is perhaps most interesting about Orcish Lumberjack’s appearance in a Secret Lair, however, is the fact that the card will finally get a foil printing. Foils weren’t a part of Magic until years after Ice Age released.
This means that players will have their first opportunity to add shiny copies of the mana source to their decks this year. Some players have already expressed their excitement on the matter. Sure, the card will likely boast extravagant alternate art, but that’s part of the fun!
There’s still no signal about exactly when Orcish Lumberjack will be showcased or in what product. All we know is that the creature is showing up at some point this year. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any newly revealed Secret Lairs in the future that might contain this powerhouse.
