As soon as Aetherdrift’s spoiler season finished last week, Wizards of the Coast didn’t hesitate to switch gears. Almost immediately, Wizards started revealing new Secret Lair drops that are launching next week, February 10th. Day after day we’ve seen new drops be revealed and there’s been plenty to get excited about already.
So far, five stunning Secret Lair drops have been unveiled, but it seems Wizards may have an extra trick up their sleeves. According to Reddit users, ads for the upcoming Secret Lair Superdrop have been circulating on Facebook, potentially revealing a hidden surprise. Currently, it’s unclear if this is a promo for players to earn or simply a part of an upcoming Secret Lair drop. Whatever it is, it’s worth getting excited about.
Captain Sisay Returns
According to a Facebook ad spotted by zinkpro45, Captain Sisay is getting another Secret Lair treatment very soon. This should be great news for MTG fans new and old, as Captain Sisay is an all-around fantastic card. Offering amazing utility, and boasting a compelling price tag, there’s a lot to love about this reprint.
Unlike most modern-day MTG cards that have a wall of text, Captain Sisay is fairly simple. All you have to do is tap her and then you can search your library for any Legendary card you like. Given that the Legend Rule is basically a non-issue in Commander, it’s safe to say that Sisay can be a phenomenal tutor.
Depending on how you construct your deck, Captain Sisay can tutor up any answer you’d need at a given time. The only catch is that their color identity isn’t that impressive or wide. As a result, Sisay is often found within the 99 of Legendary-focused decks rather than as a Commander herself.
On top of this drawback, somewhat unsurprisingly, Captain Sisay doesn’t see any competitive play. The lack of Haste for immediate impact makes Sisay far too slow for every competitive format she’s legal in. Despite this, her power in Commander is still more than enough for her to have a compelling price tag.
Currently, you’ll struggle to find a good-quality copy of Captain Sisay for anything less than $17 on TCGplayer. Curiously, this isn’t the first time that Captain Sisay has had a Secret Lair reprint as she’s actually had two of them to date! The first of these was to celebrate International Women’s Day, while the second was a Princess Bride Universes Beyond drop. The prices for these variants are currently $31 and $28 respectively.
What Is This Even?
Given their price tag, there’s little question that Captain Sisay is a good reprint. Many MTG players will relish the opportunity to pick up another copy of this card, especially with the stunning new artwork attached. Unfortunately, while we know what this card looks like, we don’t know how to acquire it just yet.
On Reddit, MTG players had mixed opinions about what this card was and how players could acquire it. Since we’re only looking at one card, some players suggested this could be a promo that’s earned by spending $200 or more. Wizards has run this type of promotion multiple times before to great success, with supply often running out incredibly quickly.
While it does seem to make sense that Captain Sisay is a new $200+ spend promo, other players pointed out flaws in this logic. As zinkpro45’s post shows, this Captain Sisay is available in both non-foil and foil. Past Secret Lair promos have only even been available in foil. Potentially, Wizards may have just pushed a change to up variety and supply to appease players. Alternatively, this is a brand new yet-to-be-announced Secret Lair drop.
Sadly, there’s currently no way to tell which one of these community predictions is accurate. Since we’re only looking at one card, it could really go either way, which is quite frustrating. Thankfully, we shouldn’t have to wait long at least since the new Secret Lair Superdrop launches next week.
With sales set to go live on Monday, February 10th, Wizards really doesn’t have long to announce any remaining Secret Lair drops. Typically, Wizards will make a big show revealing the full Superdrop on the Friday before it goes live. Should this trend continue, we’re just a few days away from knowing all.
