Rain of Gore has seen a massive spike in price this week. At the start of September, this card was only worth around $5. Now, prices have surged all the way up to $20, with current listings starting even higher. That is the case for near-mint copies of the card, at least.
While there’s not a lot of Rain of Gore going around, supply isn’t the only reason for this price spike. Following the full reveal of the Endless Punishment Commander deck, interest in the card has surged.
Rain of Gore
- Mana Value: BR
- Rarity: Rare
- Type: Enchantment
- Card Text: If a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life, that player loses that much life instead.
Rain of Gore is a very simple card to understand. It’s cheap and effective at completely shutting down life-gain decks. Should you find yourself up against one of these decks, this card is a must-kill enchantment. After all, not only does this card stop you from gaining life, it makes it hurt.
Clocking onto this powerful potential, Rain of Gore has recently started to see play in Modern. Specifically, the card can be found in the sideboard of many Rakdos decks such as Hollow Red. This deck has been consistently winning Modern Leagues recently, however, it’s yet to claim many victories at major events.
Despite this far-from-flawless performance, Rain of Gore is proving to be incredibly useful against all the Energy decks running around. Thanks to Guide of Souls and Phlage, Titan of Fire’s Fury these decks have a non-insignificant lifegain sub-theme. By running Rain of Gore, you can quickly pile on the pressure and mitigate the deck’s relative safety.
Should Hollow Red decks catch on, the price of Rain of Gore may continue to climb rather quickly. There’s no doubt that Energy decks are the biggest problem in Modern right now, so having something that deals with them is hugely important. While not every deck can run this card, it might become a stape in those which can.
As if it wasn’t enough to be good in Modern, Rain of Gore also looks fantastic in the new Endless Punishment Commander deck. By shutting down life gain, this card stops your opponents from stabilizing against the group slug archetype. While Rain of Gore is an interesting upgrade to this deck, lifegain strategies admittedly aren’t the most popular in Commander.
The Spike
As mentioned, the price of Rain of Gore has recently spiked hard, increasing by over 400%. The rise from $5 to $20 is impressive, however, it’s not this card’s only story. After all, this increase was just for highly desirable near-mint copies of the card. Looking further down the condition spectrum, there are some good deals still to be found.
If you don’t care about quality, heavily played copies have been selling for around $3.75. Technically, this condition has increased in price too, but it’s only gone up by a dollar since September started.
Moderately played copies of Rain of Gore should be a bargain as well, as they tend to sell for around $4.75. Currently, however, this card has spiked all the way up to $11.99 according to recent sales. While this is technically an outlier, listings for the card now start at $13.14 including shipping.
This is also the starting price for the lightly played variant of the card. Sales of this variant have reached as high as $12.99, so it’s safe to say there’s quite a spread in the cost of condition. So long as you don’t care about this factor, you can still pick up Rain of Gore fairly cheaply.
Regardless of which condition you go for, Rain of Gore has some real legs in Modern and could go far. It’s just a shame that it wasn’t reprinted in the Endless Punishment deck as getting new high-quality supply would have been great.
