Announced early last year by Wizards of the Coast, MTG The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth is poised to be one of the most unique and exciting sets released in 2023. As you might expect, this Universes Beyond set is inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy series, Lord of the Rings.

While it may still be a long way from release, we can’t help but get excited about this upcoming set. The fantasy stylings of Lord of the Rings are a perfect fit for a Magic: the Gathering set, after all. So without any further ado, let’s get into everything you need to know about The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth

What is The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth?

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth is a new Universes Beyond series released sometime next year. As a set in Magic’s Universes Beyond series, it is non-canonical and won’t be Standard legal. The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth will be playable in Modern, Historic, and Eternal formats, however.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set will be coming to tabletop, Magic Online, and MTG Arena. The set will primarily be designed around its draft environment. This will likely create an experience similar to Double Masters 2022 and Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate.

The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set will also be available as four preconstructed Commander Decks. Alongside this, the set will be accompanied by several Secret Lair drops featuring characters from the Lord of the Rings IP.

WotC is yet to reveal any details about the mechanics in MTG The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set. Despite this, we’re still free to speculate about what we expect to see in this draft-focused set.

Given that Lord of the Rings features a litany of different races and plenty of tensions between them, we’re expecting to see tribal-focused themes throughout The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth set. The Lord of the Rings books prominently feature Elves, Men, Dwarves, Hobbits, Ents, Orcs, and Trolls, for example.

Despite having a variety of races to choose from, Wizards of the Coast may still have some tough design decisions. This is thanks to Lord of the Ring’s races not fitting evenly into Magic: the Gathering’s color pie. While there is a lot of design space for white, black, red, and green, Lord of the Rings’ lore may leave something to be desired for blue players.

Thanks to recent fantastic Limited focused sets such as Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate, we’re sure that we’re in safe hands for this Universes Beyond set.
